Confusion over a Sal Sunseri quote...

  • I bought a really nice audio recorder and really nice headphones to hopefully avoid problems just like this one, but today my story and a story from someone else on the UT beat had a subtle but really big (if that makes sense) difference in one particular quote from Vols defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri.

    I thought Sunseri said this when asked about changes in his role for Saturday: "It won't change at all, you know what I'm saying? So I'm gonna call the defenses, and we're gonna get going."

    Someone else wrote this, and Ryno said this is also what he thought he heard when watching a video later: "It won't change at all, you know what I'm saying? Someone will call the defenses, and we're gonna get going."

    This is obviously a pretty darn big distinction, and honestly I've gone back and listened to it 10 times ... and now I'm not nearly as sure that I'm right.

    I hate when these things happen, but Sal's a fast-talking guy from the Northeast and kind of mumbles sometimes, so I guess it was bound to happen at some point.

  • "someone will call the defense" but I can see how difficult it was to hear him as he didnt want to even address it so he said it as fast as he could and as low as he could which is understandable.

  • he says someone and looks pretty irritated if you ask me but its hard because you don't know the context really. .was he just being a smart A to jimmy or really mean someone not him will call D

    From this the indication is to me is that he may not be calling the D plays. I will say up front that I don't have any verifiable information but I do get some indirect feedback from one of the boosters and it is heavily speculated that he has a 'redefined' role as DC. Bottom line is it would not surprise me. Dooley is on the hot seat with a number of significant boosters, however, at this point it is more frustration than a concerted effort to oust him but he feels the heat and is trying to act. There is also concern that there are no outstanding and realistic coaching prospects to risk replacing him. Hart's going to earn his money on this one no matter what he does.

  • Just a continuation of the problems that star at the top.

    If it says "someone", that's a huge problem. It's Wednesday and you don't know who is calling defense? Really?

    If it says "I am calling the defense", that's a huge problem, because he shouldn't be with what our defense has looked like this year.

    So, are we sure it doesn't say "NO ONE is calling the defense", because that is the best option at this point.

    All this talk about "leadership", well it STARTS at the top.

  • I heard "So I'mma call the defense." And to go with that, before he says this, he says something to the effect that not a whole lot will change. So that's a big indication that he will be calling the plays as usual. But with all the other talk I'm sure there will be a lot more input from other coaches, including Dooley.
