Conklin preaching confidence

It’s a bit odd to envision an SEC football coach channeling his inner Stuart Smalley, but that’s the gist of what Josh Conklin has done this week for his Tennessee safeties.

  • Good report Wes. Confidence and consistency goes hand in hand. Glad that the coaches and the players are taking responsibility for correcting it. Vols probably need a little downtime. Probably sore from this week's practice. GO VOLS!

BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!

  • Is Conklin (or other coaches) _really_ having them say “I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people think I can tackle guys in the SEC" -- or something essentially the same? Please tell me you're joking. Is this football practice or a group hug around the shrink's couch?

I really hope we're not pointing otherwise real men down the road of being psycho-babblers. I've got to put up with this non-sense in life far too often already. Please tell me it's not invading the football team, too...

It was a joke. They're not really saying those exact sentences.

I hope it's not something essentially the same... I'd really like this joke to be on me for jumping the gun rather than hear our coaches steer kids toward this nonsense.

Confidence is a huge, huge part of sports. You can't deny that. It's hardly nonsense to try to convince players that they're good enough to get the job done on the field.

I agree confidence is huge -- and not just in sports, either, but lots of other things in life. My beef wasn't with seeking to instill or boost confidence, but the way Conklin(?) or others(?) were apparently going about doing it.

  • Like I said, I hope the joke's in me for taking Wes too literally.

  • Anybody remember the Stuart Smalley skit with Michael Jordan? Hilarious. It was all Jordan could do to keep a straight face.

  • Confidence is huge, I get what he was saying. Especially with how temperamental our fan base can be!

Oh yeah I do.. Actually watched it in class the other day. Hilarious. I'll try to find a video on it and post it here.

  • Stubb, you better get to the interwebs and get you a cultural edumacation! Wes was making a throwback reference (as linked above) to one of the finer character creations to ever grace SNL. Lighten up, brother!
