I regrouped and have thought about the past few years. At this point I see Dooley getting another year, for one I don't see this University paying another big buyout on top of a lucrative contract to a big time coach. As far as the past few years and this year I think we started so low in quality players combined with the fact that more than or at least half of our schedule has been against teams ranked in at least the top 20 if not higher. When you put that together its going to take a little longer to rebuild. You just can not build back that quick with the 25 scholly number and the juco math requirements. We have gotten our fair share of really good players bit there were just too many holes to fill. We are gradually getting there and are being mentioned pretty favorably with a bunch of kids right now even with our record. Sure the results are not there yet but we have at least went toe to toe with some of the nation's top teams and shown hope at times. Are we where we want to be no but starting over right now is not going to put us there either. The foundation is being layed out albeit slowly but there are pieces to work with. If we can close strong in recruiting then we should be even better. I know it's hard to have patience given all the frustrations but that's exactly what we need to have. Giving up now and allowing other teams totake over Neyland is mot going to help either. We need tp stay supportive and show these recruits what they need to see because we need them here to help these coaches get this ship back upright. If next year fields the same results then you have to make a change but the talent will still be upgraded for the next coach and plus we have more flexibility money wise . Let's not give up just yet guys
I'm on the fence right now. Hopefully we beat Bama and USC
Like I said in another post, I really think we beat USC. Bama, I'm not so sure.
Trample the Weak-Hurdle the Dead
Glad to know I'm not the only one who had to reroup a little bit. I woke up Sunday morning and thought "Oh crap, what did I post last night???". I had to go back through my posts to see if my anger/frustration had gotten the best of me. Luckily I wasn't as harsh as I thought I was. Very frustrated over the loss, but I see a lot of improvement in this team. I said from the beginning that we can't judge CDD until after year 4 and I think if we stick with him we will like the results. That being said, if we lose to KY or Vandy, it's going to be hard to justify improvement. Even with the injuries, we have much more talent than either one of them. I have a good feeling we're going to pull off an 8-4, but I can live with 7-5 as long as nothing gets ugly. Depending on who declares early, next year could be special, even with our brutal schedule.
I am back down form the ledge myself. I am not sure what you can do with a defense that gives up that many points (129 pts in 3 SEC losses). Even this offense (as good as it is - and it is very, very good), can't score every single time it has the ball. Unless UT finishes at less than 7-5, I don't think you can fire Dooley. I think one of the problems is that this team has very little senior leadership and No seniors that were actually around last time UT won consistently. The whole team is having to take the next step at the same time (instead of just underclassmen). I am not sure I have ever seen that before.
I don't think a win vs Alabama is realistic, but I do think SC is beatable for this team. They will have to play very well to do so, and the defense will have to show up (or at least slow down SC) to win, but I think they can do it. UT should win the rest of the games after SC. Mizzou is not an SEC team (yet) and UT should always beat KY and Vanderbilt (even now). If UT loses to either of those, by all means fire Dooley - if you have a big time coach lined up. Otherwise, I think Bray and Patterson should come back next year along with Neal. 2013 should be better (and No I am not a Dolley apologizer or wearing orange colored glasses).
Take this little perspective we are 3-3
Our 3 losses are to teams a combined 17-1, our next 2 opponents are a combined 12-1. So even IF we lose both lets look at it this way.
We'd be 3-5 and our losses would be to teams with a combined record of 29-1 today.....obviously these teams will play games and win or lose them as well in the next two weeks, but you get my point surely.
This is one of the points I was trying to get at. It's hard enough to rebuild but when your trying to do it and have 4 or 5 top 10 teams on your schedule it slows the progress just a little
I am in a similar position. If we cant get a homerun hire, which is very doubtful, you have to give Dooley one more year and let things play out next season. However, he has to go 4-0 to end the season or he wont be back next year. I fully expect this team to win the last four and for Dooley to coach next year but everyone will know that his coaching seat will be on fire in 2013 and anything less that 9-10 wins and he isn't retained beyond 2013.

Just my bet here and my own opinion. Dooley is gone after next year regardless of outcome unless donors and season ticket sales increase. I'm fairly sure I'd win that bet at this point in time. We upset Bama this year and win the East next year, Dooley might stay. Outside that I'd call it very doubtful.
I am kinda that way too I just don't see a way we pay the buyout for this staff and then throw another 4 or 5 million for a new coach on top of what we are already paying to past coaches
I just wanna know who y'all would replace him with. No one is coming to the program that fires their coach for losing to 5 top 12 teams y'all are basically saying u wanted a national championship this year (the fire Dooley guys)
Not sure who, but if you ride Dooley one more year even if it doesn't work out you have given yourself way more money flexibility and you have also shown future coaches you gave him every oppurtunity to succeed and it just didn't work out
The only way I can support keeping Dooley is if this team wins out after Bama and USC. I'm not saying we're going to lose either of those games, but that'd be a pleasant surprise. The absolutely most frustrating aspect of watching this team is failing to see improvement. Sure the defense is playing a new scheme, and the offense is breaking in some good players into new roles (Neal, Patterson, Tiny). Still, I don't see this team making tangible improvements anywhere other than on the offensive line and RBs. The running game is improving, but the rest of the team seems stuck in mud. We knew this team would be improved but also have some limitations, especially on defense. Nonetheless, a good coach and staff will get his team to improve over the course of the year.
It's time for Dooley and his staff to go earn their paychecks. Either coach this team up, or get the Uhaul ordered!
And that should be the expectation. Agree with everything except the improvement part. They have gotten better but, defense is killing them.
I've backtracked a lot myself. I think he does need one more year provided he closes out strong. The fact is almost all the sportswriters predicted a 7-5 season or so, and for the most part we didn't listen. After NC it became too hopeful. Georgia gave hope.
But there's something else we are ignoring here. This team has shown drastic improvement. The team hasn't been blown out by anyone yet. Do I want wins? Yes. But at least I'm not seeing beat downs.
I have breathed...deeply and fully. And I understand both sides. I personally do not see a scenario where Dooley is the guy who returns Tennessee to double-digit wins, but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve another year if he goes 7-5.
The telling part for me will be...barring more major injuries...if the defense actually improves the rest of the year. There isn't enough pure talent to be a top-SEC defense, but there is definitely enough to be better than this.
If Tennessee loses three more, I think you have to make a change. I don't even care about names right now...you cannot accept 7-6, 5-7, 6-6...especially with the amount of talent on offense.
Nobody is saying that.
I personally would like to win 1 game against a ranked team this year. Just one. I would be more than willing to say we are improving if we beat Florida at home after leading in the second half with the ball on their side of the field. Likewise, i would have considered a win over Miss state a great sign even though I'm not sure they are that good. As it is, we aren't on track to beat anyone of consequence in the SEC.
If he goes 0-ranked teams through 3 years at TN he deserves to get fired. I don't think he will, get fired that is. I now think he has to lose a November game to get fired. The reasons for that are really too depressing to talk about.
We are most definitely improved from what we were 2 yrs ago!! You take away 4-5 plays in either 3 of the losses and we win! You can't say that about some of losses from last yr.
It's so very tough to be VOL fans right now! EVERYBODY WANTS TO WIN!! We play better, but the breaks just aren't going our way.
My hope is we play 2 VERY competitive games these next two Saturdays!! That's all we as fans can ask for. This team knows the fan base is not happy because I'm sure they aren't happy.
GO BIG ORANGE!!
