A bowl game this season is a huge win for the Butcher...any bowl game and Vols fans should sell it out in a matter of hours.
2013. Team 117. Beginning of the new Era.
In my dealings and communications with both the coaches, the players, and anyone near the program at all, I have noticed one concurrent thread. The players, especially at the rising junior and senior levels, are starving for wins the same way as the fans are. At this point, they have had to endure nothing but shameful losing seasons. There have been some at the verge of nervous breakdowns because of it. All of a sudden a charismatic (and hell, let's be honest, mysterious) man from the north rides into town; within a few months, all the players who had previously defended Dooley join the bandwagon and are ready to eat turf for this guy. I haven't previously encountered this situation before, but make whatever comparison you want. All I know is that last year's crop of SEC teams revealed that there is always some form of weakness you can exploit. If you don't think a team hungry to win, in a situation as dire as theirs has become, can beat teams that aren't playing for their pride then you are sadly underwhelming as fans. But then, I have come to expect that from Knoxvillians on Saturdays. I'm looking at you, H section! Prove me wrong in October.
Tough schedule, but we get six wins. CBJ and staff squeeze enough out of this team to get bowl eligible. May not be the six you think, but we get six, and then win the bowl.
I can understand everyone's pessimism that Butch can't do much better than 6-6 (what seems to be the consensus here), especially against a brutal '13 schedule. However, I remind everyone that great coaches all flew under the radar at one point and when you look at the talent upgrade Jones has been dealt, upgrading from Cincy to an SEC school like UT, X's and O's have won out in more dire situations than what is currently at Tennessee.
Am I saying Jones is a great coach? No. Not necessarily.
Am I saying Jones could be a great coach? He looks like someone whose evolution as a coach thus far suggests that.
I like us to get at least one upset this year. Hell, even Dooley beat LSU on the road in his first season. (haha)
