Not to say he is a bad coach but do we really want a guy that has a losing record overall....again? I know he won 9 games once or twice at Temple but come on....Dooley won 8 games once at La Tech. What I'm getting at here is the fact that this fanbase deserves and demands much better than that. Agree or disagree?
Sorry can't agree id take Golden if we had too. Is it a sexy hire no. But he can recruit and is a proven winner. Has he lost some bad games this year yes but like I said if we had too id be OK.

Can't say yes enough on this one!
I do not think Vol fans understand the two dumpster fires Golden inherited. Temple absolutely sucked at football and he made MAJOR improvements in the program. Miami was amidst a recruiting scandal of epic proportions and he has been able to maintain competitiveness.
Is he my first choice? No.
But he would be a SOLID hire. UT is in much better shape than the last programs he inherited.
This guy is not CDD. Light years ahead of CDD.
I don't believe he is a step up from Dooley. In fact....the history of his career leads me to believe he may be Dooley 2.0. He has proven absolutely nothing. Also, the fact that it has come out the last few weeks that he was in on the Nevin Shapiro recruiting issues is another red flag.
Golden is not in my top 5 wish list but I think it is a little early to completely discount him as a possiblity should things turn sour in the coaching search.
I agree. I think Golden has accomplished more than Charlie Strong.
Can we all agree Charlie Strong is not the answer?
I am not a Golden supporter but I would like to know your source for the Nevin Shapiro comment. It might help me eliminate him from my list.
This came out in the Shapiro bankruptcy trial. Here is a link. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--hurricanes-coach-al-golden-s-staff-used-booster-s-associate-in-potential-recruiting-violations.html
The Shapiro stuff makes me nervous also but to say he has proven nothing sounds kind of uneducated.. not trying to flame you but Golden has definitely proven himself to be a good coach. What he did at Temple was amazing and his defense at Virgina improved more than any other in the country.

I also find it interesting most knowledgable media writers and Golden's peers have glowing things to say about him but our fanbase is completely out on him.
Perhaps the "Gruden Effect". Our administration needs to end this with Gruden one way or another.
What I don't understand about the Golden supporters is he has not done an amazing job at Miami.
He does not recruit well (blame the recruiting scandals, but Miami is the best recruiting territory in the country), and his teams at Miami have looked horrible against every good team they have played since he has been there. This year, their only convincing wins were against Bethune Cookman, VT, and USF, every other win was a close game against a bad taem. He is basically doing exactly what Randy Shannon was doing, and Randy got fired.
I think you are correct about Golden. As to the Shapiro stuff I did a quick google search and found nothing newer than July 20 2011. In that the worst that was alleged is that an assistant coach 'may have used a Shapiro associate to recruit some players'. I did find that in Aug. 2011 Golden stated that he felt Miami should have made he and the new AD aware that this Shapiro stuff was percolating when they were interviewing. UTVOL29 needs to show us what he is talking about. JMO

Charles Davis on the animal said golden is very intriguing to him. Fwiw
JMO, if Strong's resume is insufficient so is Golden's.
I am not totally comfortable defending Golden but I believe he has had at least one top 10 recruiting class and maybe two. However, most of the sources I have read say he inherited a depleted roster so who knows. Dang this sounds familiar. The one difference is he has more winning seasons than Dooley. I don't think you can hold his first two seasons at Temple against him. JMO
I posted the link in an earlier post but here it is again in reference to Golden and one of Shapiro's flunkies.
Not a fan of Golden. Not sold on his recruiting ability. According to 247, his class is 64th this year and was 30th in 2011. Last year it was top 10, but largely based on two 5 star locals (not a recruiting coup). Yes, there has been a lot of negative pub around the program the last couple of years, but still not impressive. He never had a recruiting class above 80th at Temple.....I know, I know, it's Temple, but If he were a really good recruiter, he would have had a spike of some sort while there. Look at what Franklin has done at Vandy. That is a significant spike when compared to their normal classes. As far as Golden's W/L record, they were removed from Big East for noncompetitiveness before he got there and his tenure was spent as an Independant, and then MAC member. I just don't think he would be a slam dunk hire. The hire would have such a Dooley vibe to me, and if he struggled for one-two seasons, I don't think he would have the clout to hold the fanbase together, and we would be right back where we are today.
Trample the Weak-Hurdle the Dead
The Gruden effect and the Saban effect....only one of each...Although i agree with no Golden!
That's the same article I read and it does not 'show he was in on the Nevin Shapiro recruiting issues'. I am like Volfan28 in that it makes me nervous but when you fall into a mess like that it's not hard to get tainted by it. I will assume you didn't mean to word it like you did.
I hear ya and that's why he's not a slam dunk hire like Gruden or Stoops. I'm not going to dismiss what he's done at Miami but because of the mess they have down there I tend to give him a pass.
While I don't agree with every thing you said I think you make a good case. I have defended him on some issues in this thread but he is barely in my top 10. +1
tough to argue with that
