Hoping someone has more insight than me.
This is a guess: Butch has probably studied Brian Kelley's teams more than anyone. If so, we should expect some similarities.
This is a fact: Both teams run a 4-3 base defense with a great LB and questionable corners.
I'd be interested to know: how our front 7 compares, how our safeties compare, how our offense compares.
These are things I'll be thinking about as I watch the game tonight.
Why would Butch Jones have studied Brian Kelly's offenses?
"When we step on that football field, everyone flips a switch. And it's on..." - Butch Jones
Butch took over at CMU after Brian left then he took over at Cincy after Brian left. Butch would have watched every play from the year prior to his arrival at both CMU and Cincy. He would have to be blind to not see success and stupid to not imitate some of the things Brian did, considering he inherited the players Brian was successful with.
Perhaps, but I don't think it's a given. Maybe he borrowed a few ideas, but I don't think most of these coaches alter their approach to football that late in their career based on what someone else that they've never coached with does.
For example, I don't think Dooley gave a flip about what Kiffin did here in '09.
I know that's not the greatest example, and I'll probably get toasted for it, but I guess I just think it's more likely he had his own philosophy and way of doing things pretty cemented before he watched Brian Kelly film.
Maybe. I have no idea. Just guessing based on what I would do. Maybe someone on the board has watched enough of Butch and Brian to see how their philosophy compares
Yeah, I definitely need another opinion, because I don't know jack squat about Brian Kelly football. I've literally not watched a single Notre Dame game this year.
Wasn't Butch Jones on Brian Kelly's staff at CMU? I cannot remember but I thought he was OC or something. I might be way off here though.
The true comparison is that ND is going to get beat at least as bad as UT did by UA. Notr dame is a 4 loss team n the SEC.
They do look terrible
I don't think he was ever on Kelly's staff. CBJ was an OC there but it was sometime before Kelly coached.
bot i changed my pick this morning after doing some reading and thought nd would beat them bama that is....should have stuck with bama for my pick ..but o well still aint pulling for bama
come back i hope...
Pretty sure Butch was Brian's OC in 2004
Thats what I thought.. I might have been wrong.

I consider that a Lane bash therefore I am obligated to give you a +1 as per my oath.
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
Well, I messed that post up...
Basically all I said was that AJ is better than Teo, and Kelley's passing game appears to be more vertical than Jones. Oh and it looks like Kelley runs more stuff under center.
