So, regardless of who we get as a head coach in the coming weeks, who do y'all think would be an excellent defensive coordinator for this program? It's obvious that position will be vacated in the coming weeks.
I know this decision would depend greatly on who the head coach is, but I honestly have no idea who reasonable candidates would be for this job. It's my belief that this hire needs to be as much of a home run as the head coaching hire needs to be, due to our defensive woes this season...
+1 indy. One thought that keeps bouncing through my mind that I've posted a time or two is Lance Thompson as DC if the Head man is Strong or another candidate that has an impressive background as a defensive coach. The players seem to really respond to him and reportedly he is an excellent recruiter.
However, I would love to see Chavis come back to the Hill and retire from here after a few SEC Championships!
"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!
Ellis Johnson and it isn't even close.
Says The Wizard of Oz!
All I know for sure is, much like the head coaching job, this guy had better have previous DC experience. Should have been a red flag when we hired Sal that he had literally never been a DC in his life.
Or maybe Everett Withers. Probably EJ though.
It will depend 100% on the new coach. That'll be part of the suspense after a new coach is named.
I know we went down this road last year, but Randy Shannon is a LB coach at TCU right now. I'm sure he would love a DC position in the SEC, which is the next best thing to a HC anywhere else. For the life of me, I can't figure out why he wasn't on the hill this year!! Unreal recruiter at Miami when he was there and strong FL ties.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Johnson would kill it here. He was one of the best at S Carolina. He is at the top of my wish list for DC. But he won't be unemployed long.
Dale Jones would be my first pick. Orange to the bone, been learning his craft at Appy State. Had a motor as a player that would never stop.
I'm not sure about the recruiting ties. Seems like I read somewhere that Shannon burnt a lot of bridges with high schools while at Miami.
Yeah, I can think of a better, realistic option.
Come and take them.
If I were going to hire a DC a few names I would look at are Ron Zook, Kevin Steele, Randy Shannon, Ellis Johnson, and Gene Chizik, These guys all either have strong ties to the SEC, ties to the Tennessee program, or have been a HC at some point in their career. They have all been known as good recruiters and extremely solid coordinators in their careers.
