Another lazy Wednesday morning in early February wraps up with a frothing horde of fearful college football fans huddled next to their big screen, high-definition televisions watching large men sign papers and gloat about where they're going to college. It's almost as shamelessly hedonistic as Boomsday. I must admit it's rapture for myself after having been glued to a computer screen for months hoping beyond hope that we'll fuel the hometown ranks with talented fresh bodies. This is what it's all about.
Except that it isn't.
We've all seen great classes crumble and below par classes shine. 2 years ago our most feared Linebacker and unanimous on-the-field leader was a walk-on. Some recruits shy away in hopes that they'll receive rings and accolades from another prestiged program, but still others see the tradition of the BIG ORANGE as a dream come true.
That's what it's all about. These bright futures that accept our challenge to sculpt them into successful athletes and outstanding human beings walk onto that field in the fall and whether or not they leave with a championship they can be sure that they leave our program with all that we've got. All the tradition, all the love from the fans, all the training from the coaches, the education from their professors and the promise that we'll always remember the day they agreed to accept that challenge.
I'd like to extend my congratulations to the 2012 signing class and the future of Volunteer football. This is a strong class.
I am pleased considering the turmoil of this program over the last 2 months. If we can keep our staff together AND starting winning games again, I feel the CDD will keep us in the top 10 recruiting annually.
