If we win, odds are we'll finish with a 8-4 record. If we lose, odds are we'll finish 7-5. I think 8-4 is definitely good enough to retain Dooley. I think 6-6 definitely means he's gone. I think an argument could be made either way if we finish 7-5 so I'm curious to know how the board feels about the importance of this weekend's game.
I hope not. I still remember the South Carolina game in Fulmer's last year, and that awful feeling as they were piling it on. Everybody knew by the third quarter that Fulmer was gone. It was simply one of the worst three day sequences in my Tennessee football fan life.
Butch Jones. Who???
I doubt it. I think he's back with 7-5, but i do think it will take a lot of heat off of him and will help the program move forward a lot sooner. 8-4 or better will help recruiting and probably save us a year or two on the rebuild project.
MSU might be a door mat "traditionally", but that is no longer so. Mullen has that team playing good football, and that tradition might be changing very soon.

I think 7-5 is enough, but not comfortably. If we go on and win a bowl game, I think that will compensate for the regular season record. But if we lose the bowl game, oh man. This off-season will be horrendous.
Also, I'm not ready to sit here and say we can't pull an upset against USCe. Their schedule is brutal before we go marching into Columbia. Anything can happen that night.
Regardless, 7-5 is not exactly what I would call a good season, but definitely an improvement. I think with 7-5, Dooley stays. Reason for saying that, we have shown improvement and if we keep showing improvement the remainder of the season, considering who we have played, I think its enough. But the bowl game will be the real barometer, if we go 7-5.
Do or Die? No
But it a huge game nonetheless.

I second this motion. +1
the game is important but more important will be attendance at Bama and in November. jmo
LWS, what's your take on the idea that we just do not have the money to bring in an elite coach right now?
Just to be clear, I love Dooley and I want him to stay. Just wondering what your take is on the financial situation.

I agree we don't have the money but also, our history does promote bringing in an elite coach unless he has Tennessee DNA. I don't see that changing. jmo
Well, I'm not Hart or LWS, to whom you directed the question, but I have to think that in the current financial climate, you'd have to find one or several big $$$ donors to basically pay the coach's salary for at least the first couple of years, along w/paying buyouts to CDD and Sun.
Some big name might agree to a deferred "signing bonus" in year two--I'd offer it if I were the AD and in that situation--or not. Worth a shot. JMO, but I still think even if we tank it this year, it would be better long term to make the move after '13, when you have more $$$ to work with.
But as you said, you're rooting for Dooley to succeed (and I am too, FWIW), so I do think it's fair to ask why so many people (again, it isn't just you, by any means) are so preoccupied with a question that will have to play itself out, as the team does. If the guys on the team are thinking about what happens if we fail, they've already failed.
I'm just gonna wait and see.

We're gonna finish 7-5 or 8-4 and CDD's job is gonna be fine. We can discuss this again next year.
Its not do or die because they still have games to play. But of the "Big 4" games, this should be the best shot at a win. And I still believe he has to win one of those games to stay. Sure, they could lose in Starkville and come back and beat Bama and SC and sweep November and Doolander could get an extension. But if they lose Saturday, its hard to imagine that happening. That, and Neyland will be covered up in red for Bama if they lose this weekend.
