As a Vol fan, I am appalled at the kind of negativity show by John Adams in this piece. Yes, we just had a 5-7 season. Yes, we lost 6 assistant coaches. I think we pulled an AMAZING class given the circumstances. We lost some great recruiters when we most needed them. Yet Dooley and Co. hauled in a damn good class with some potential NFL talent.
That wasn't even the worst part of the article. The portion about Bonner was a really low blow. THESE ARE TEENAGERS. Sure the kid made a big mistake. But high character also means owning up for your mistakes. If Coach Dooley vetted Bonner properly and feels he has fully owned up to his mistake, we should welcome him with open arms to the Big Orange Family.
One day after this kid just made the biggest decision of his life (to be a VFL I might add) and John Adams is skewering him in UT's hometown paper. Just despicable.
I've never really liked John Adams. Maybe it's his writing style or his lack of real journalism (op-eds are easy) but this piece is a pile of garbage. He's just another message board troll that happens to be employed by the KNS.
Thanks for taking my call Vols fans, I'll hang up and listen.
John Adams is the last of a dying breed. I have honestly gotten to the point where I am so frustrated with the Football program as of late that I haven't kept up on recruiting like I usually do. So I'll hold off judgement on Bonner because I haven't read the police report.
There is a John Adams in every SEC town. I have always tried to keep an open mind about his work, but I'll even admit that he's coming off quite arrogant and overly negative. When I say negative I mean you don't look at the good in the class. Actually when he does bring up Patterson or one of the DT's he puts a negative spin on it by comparing Patterson to Kenny O'neal and the DT's to Alabama's DT's and say 'thats good by UT's standards if you can be like Alabama!'.
The newspaper industry is dying and has regressed to this point. So I wouldn't lose sleep over what John Adams says when he goes in like this. I'm pretty much convinced that he writes for reaction now.
I agree with you 100%. It was a very negative article and I really thought he blasted CDD! If you want to blame someone...blame the previous two staffs because our boat was going down...lack of effort the last season CPF was there...I love Coach Fulmer but anyone could see the disipline was gone and the hustle & desire was not there His Last season...and Kiffen he was not comitted to anything but himself! I believe Coach Dooley is doing well considering where he had to start! The Vols are on there way back up!
This is something I would expect from Adams. I don't know how many of his articles I have read that made me want those few moments of my life back. I just do not like his overall tone or attitude.
I can't rememeber the last time someone wasn't griping about an Adam's column or posting it on the web for others to commiserate over. In that respect, he's very good at his job. He keeps people talking about the KNS and keeps eyeballs coming to their website.
I don't agree with him on Bonner, but his is not an unreasonable position to have. It is not a stretch to imagine people (especially alumni or other parents) not wanting a recruit with a criminal record. It becomes worse when that record came because of an incident in the recruiting process. The last half of the column feels like filler, though. Sure, any of those guys could be a bust. Conversely, there are guys who could be standouts. He doesn't follow recruiting (by his own admission) so take it for what it is really worth.
I'll hang up and listen.
I guess the best that I can say is that he is a columnist and not a reporter and thus he is paid to have opinions. He comes from a negative perspective and I come from a positive perspective. His article focuses on the negative aspects of the class. I would ask what does it say about the state of football at Tennessee that we had a losing record, extreme staff turnover and still pulled in nationally ranked classes?
I also agree with Mac that the speculation about this guy could be a bust or that guy could be a bust is filler. They could just as easily be star players. That's why you have a player development program. Overall, I give the column a "meh".
I never truly believe John Adams and his articles. The vast majority of his most notable columns are negative, and this is just another in a long line of false ridiculousness. If he truly hated the program as much as he makes it sound he would have moved to another market long ago. He makes his money just like Clay Travis and Finebaum; likewise he is to be ignored. Less readership for old dog columnists equals no jobby job for old dog columnists.
Kevin, didn't you work with John Adams at one point? Has he always been this way, seeming to look for something to stir the pot?
Your team. All the time.
Best thing to come out of Alabama: I-59 North
Adams is tiresome. He is the UTFootball version of http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/shaughnessy/ .

Yup. I've made plenty of mistakes growing up. And learned from each one. If Dooley gives him the OK, well, I'm good w that.
