In nearly all cases, motivation falls on the coaching if it's not there... So does it fall on Cuonzo in this case? In my opinion, he failed to motivate with his attitude during interviews after not making the NCAA. When he answered and replied the way he did, the players knew it was okay if they didn't win tonight. Terrible showing, and they didn't deserve to be in the NCAA IMO.
What is Cuonzo's tournament play record? preseason tourneys? SEC, NIT, etc.?

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
+1 Chris. Laying this egg is squarely on CCM...plain & simple! People will probably think I'm crazy, but CCM owes the VolNation an apology for not having the guys ready to play. I'm tired of all the B.S. excuses of NIT games don't matter, guys all dejected b/c of selection cmte snub, blah, blah, blah. Man up & play w/some damn pride & effort. Otherwise, pack-up your toys like a bunch of babies and go home and cry to momma...sickening. Give Mercer credit...solid team & played like they wanted it.

Performance in NIT games means very little in the reflection of this season or next. Basketball teams change from year to year more than other sports and momentum from one team to another rarely carries over to the next year. Each basketball team I have been a part of had a different personality and style from the last. Everyone including martin is to blame for tonight, but it hurts us really in no way.

There are only four answers to any question: Yes, No, I don't know, or the Correct Answer.
I totally agree. I don't care what game your playing in YOU PLAY TO WIN! He needs to take some advice from the Lady Vols and get the attitude straight. Heck get Butch to get them motivated! That's one thing I think CBJ will be good at!
Tonight was embarrassing. Sad part is the way we looked tonight is how we looked several times throughout the season. I don't care if it's the NIT, if you don't want to be there that bad just decline the invitation.
A pathetic embarrassing performance tonight. They proved tonight that they didn't deserve to be in the NCAA tournament. Unmotivated, no pride. Sad ending to a season.
1st Wes has written a few times that Martin's players will walk through a brick wall for him. 2nd the growth n maturity in McRae shows he knows how to motivate his players. However motivation from an outside source only goes so far. If you aren't personally open to the motivation you won't receive it and won't respond to it. They didn't want to be there period. They didn't want to play period. You can think and feel whatever about coach. You can think and feel you play hard every game even if it's the church picnic league but that's not real life and ppl don't respond well to things they don't want to do. No one cares about the NIT especially kids that thought should've been in the NCAA tourney.

When you expect to make it to the tournament and don't its hard to actually want to play after that. This is a complete overreaction as usual by our fanbase. It's the damn NIT, that nobody wants to be in.

Cuonzo can only say so much, then it's up to the players to get themselves motivated. As the old saying goes; you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Does Cuonzo have some fault here? Yes. But you absolutely cannot chalk it all up on him. The players have to receive part of the blame too..

This looked just like how the football team laid down at Ky the year before last. Giving up is never excusable imo.
nit did matter know use in trying to sygar coating nothing,if we cant win a danm nit game how are we going to fair in the ncaa tourney.
far as not meaning anything is way off ,number 1...recruiting recruiting getting respect.
like i said next year he cant win with what hes got ..its time to go out and spend some big bucks for a oriven winning coach .
Amen +1 your not playing for anything anymore the nit is just to see who has the most pride when shafted by selection committee. If it was me I wouldn't care either and don't so what that we lost doesn't change anything anyways go vols great season boys and cant wait to see conzo coach them up next year
That's my thought... That maybe Georgia twice was a motivation issue and them not ready to play. They have our number I know, but we should have beaten them. I know this was the NIT and no one cares, but I have too much pride to not care about losing to Mercer, or any other team for that matter. If I'm CM and I did all of the bickering and complaining about not getting in, I'd also want my team to show up the next game to prove my case. Bottom line is that CM's record in tournament format is not good, 5-7 I think I saw. He'll need to do better than that to get things turned around here. Talent or not next year, he's got to prove something.
I would say that he led the horse to this water by his attitude after not getting an NCAA bid. When you basically let your team know that the NIT means nothing and you just don't want an injury to happen, they just drank from the not motivated water, which brought a loss.

Cm has been out coached several games this year, badly the last two. For all his talk on defense, it was no where to be found. No offense, plays that work, except throw to Stokes, shoot a three and pray. Sub. patterns drive me crazy. The coach from Mercer had his kids playing great. Wonder how many were five stars? Just saying i would love to see a well coached team just once at TN. I know Pat, but she is gone.

Personally. I don't really care. The NIT is irrelevant. I knew they wouldn't play hard. Coach wasn't happy, players werent happy. I get all the "play hard no matter what" but really they didn't care. Has nothing to do with pride or coaching. They didn't want to be there. The fans didn't want to be either by the 4,000 attendance. Their is no glory in doing well in the NIT. Should be left for Mid-Majors to play bc most major D-1 schools don't care about it. No way they were going to get up to play Mercer in the NIT after being snubbed out of the real tournament. Also it's not like you are going to prove anything to anyone by trying your hardest in the NIT bc nobody cares about the NIT. JMO
Why don't you just go ahead and jump while your at it? Ha geesh people calm down. IT'S THE NIT and no one wanted to be there.
The fans do. The players should if they have any pride. We just proved the committee to be right. We didn,t deserve a bid. Give up now and you give up next year when it counts. Besides how can you recruit and lose all time.
No we proved that we didn't care about the NIT. And fans cared about it? You can't argue that the mass majority of the fan base really truly cared about a NIT game. I'm a fan and I didn't care about the NIT bc it doesn't matter. Every year it becomes more irrelevant. This game has NO implications on next year whatsoever.
I guarantee this loss tonight will not hurt our program one iota.
I see both sides of this story. On one hand, it's gonna be really hard to get motivated after being so close to a tourney bid, especially for the second year in a row. On the other hand, if you are a competitor, which I think all of our guys are, you wanna win at everything you do whether it be a NIT game, regular season game, or even a dang ping pong game. So I can see why people are upset after this loss and I can see why people really don't care about it.
