Daniel Hood tweeted this today. Good read.
Will they or won't they? It's no secret that Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley's job is on the line. The secret is if and when, and the clock is ticking. Dooley isn't just on the hot seat, he's a hot topic. My job of late has been trolling Twitter feeds ...

Great find, great read, and a lesson to be learned in the last couple of paragraphs. thank you for sharing and I hope it is read by all Vol Fans.
Puts things in perspective. +1
Great read. I like the perspective there. There are many people who complain about wins and losses and rightfully so. But they also complain about a university that has a reputation of having nothing but thugs even though there may be a huge stack of w's to brag about. Let's not forget that dooley is a class act who focuses on the whole person not just the athlete. After all is said and done those alumni/ athletes are going to represent this university in real life.
Dang, I wanted to say all that to the Dooley haters before and didn't know how, great find and is all true. I hope Dooley gets one more year I really do. I think he can turn it around. He needs to at least graduate his first true class and if he doesn't succeed then you politely tell him this " Derek I'm sorry, but I have to let you go, I can't buy you any more time. I gave you an extra year to prove EVERYONE wrong and it just didn't happen. VOLNATION wishes you nothing but the best going forward, and I thank you for all the good you have done for this university and this program." I personally think given one more year he can have something really special here at UT. GO VOLS!!!
Great read man i wish all vol fans could see it exactly the way the writer wrote. Dooley is a good guy, he wants only the best for this program and university. it sucks to get on here and read all the negative comments surrounding him when the people making these comments have no idea of what it takes to coach a program like tennessee. Only if they would put thereselves in his shoes how would they feel to hear that crap if they knew they were doing there best to coach this team like dooley is. I would like to see another year out of him if he can get through this year without an embarrising loss. Some things just take a little more time to fix than you want them to but they will always turn out better if you fix them right than they would by taking shortcuts.
Wish I could give the writer of the article a +1. Conveyed everything I wish I had the talent to.
A well written article which reflects how I feel. Coach Dooley is a class act and deserves respect regardless of what you think of him as a coach.
It is amazing that the writer is a student journalist at the Beacon, because he writes with a wisdom that is far beyond his years.
Being somewhat on the fence at the moment, I can honestly say, with complete confidence, that Dooley has worked as hard and tirelessly as anyone could be expected to, He has given his all and made every possible effort to win games. To make any thoughtless or classless remarks towards the man is completely wrong of anyone. Dooley has been a great ambassador for our team and his efforts should be appreciated.
I don't think there are many fans that hate Dooley or think he is a bad guy. I think most everyone ive talked with think he is a good guy who is just in over his head. News flash: Dooley is coaching a top ten all time college football program and his job is to win football games. I fear that the writer of the article will have a tough time covering any relevant sports team because all fan bases want a winner and when the coach isn't winning, there will be fans calling for a change. Dooley knew exactly what he was getting into and is being paid very well to coach football. If he gets fired, he will be paid $5 million dollars (or $4 million)and never have to work another day in his life if he doesn't want to. I'm sure the writer witnessed a special family moment but the bottom line for Dooley is can he win football games. It's not personal, it's business. That is what big time college sports have become, big business. If he wants to Coach somewhere with less stress and a less demanding fan base, I'm sure he can find a job in Division 3 or another level. Heck, he could work for free with all the money he's made at UT. Bottom line, he seems like a good guy and family man but he has to win games.

Nice article. I think Dooley lands on his feet in a few years as an AD. I would take him at UT in that role ... maybe even now. But as for HBC, really unsure these days.
Great read and +1 to OP. For the record, I support Derek Dooley as our coach. I respect everything he has done to improve UT's image, to reestablish and maintain the traditions associated with UT, and the countless nights he has laid awake at night thinking "What does it take to get this team over the hump and become the team they're capable of being?" I'm not going to argue with his detractors because I can't factually do so in regards to wins and losses. But in regards to giving his all to make this a better program on and off the field, I stand my ground. I want nothing more than our Coach to return this program to glory. Can I guarantee he can? Most definitely not. But if he can get this team to play after the excruciatingly painful stretch that they just experienced, count me among those that believes he gets another chance. Orange. GO VOLS!
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
Meant to +1. Instead my trackpad skills suck so I misclicked and I gave a -1. This was a great read and kind of put me in my place considering how impatient I've gotten with the coaches.
It's a girl who wrote it, actually, not a guy.

Gotcha, Ryan and thanks. I've known some male Laurens, so I assumed, and you know what that makes me!
I think the writer is a she.... great story.
Sorry, should have scrolled through the thread before replying. Cannot delete this from my ipad app.

Great read. If not Gruden Keep Dooley let him finish what he started and let one class graduate fully his...
I had a similar epiphany in the press room of the Superdome after the 86 Sugar Bowl. Darryl Dickey had gone from obscure backup to bowl MVP that year. He had just finished his interviews and was making his way to the exit when his mom walked through the door. They hugged and both began to cry. Darryl just let it go and sobbed on his mom's shoulder.
And that was on a happy night.
It struck me then the immense pressure we put on these young people, our coaches and administrators, and their families. I was a young 28 myself when that happened; I grew up some that night.
Is it too late for me to take back all the mean things i've said?
Tough times for vol fans but at least we have someone running the program the right way and cares. I have pulled for him since day one and still do I just get frustrated from the loosing. He is definitely making progress but I'm still not convinced he will get us back into contention. If their is not a proven winner on the market and someone who will be loyal for at least 8yr I would not change. We are better than last year bit next season is where we should see real progress if he's the man for the job.
I thought this article was great and I hope Dooley is successful. I also thought it was interesting that a player on the team tweeted this out. We as fans are frustrated and I'm sure the coaches are as well, but I think we tend to forget about the players in all if this. These are 18, 19, and 20 yr old kids, and to probably 90% of them losing is a new thing. Most of them played on successful and winning high school teams. They are the ones going to practice and working in the off season. Lets support them and the coaches for the rest of the season and hope for the best next year. GBO.
love the article and i think dooley has done a great job and need one more year to prove to hate fans that cant coach and dont know what they are talking about. all the know is that some of the football team on defense isnt good right now and the a reason for that and after this year it will be alot better. a great offense and great coaches that need a year or two.
That was a touching article.
