I picked up my stepson from UT yesterday and ate at Gus's for the first time yesterday. Very good food!! Had the "steak in a sack"!!!
Thank goodness it wasn't game day. I hate Gus's due to the fact they double their price on game days.
The journey to becoming an Ironman
My first thought when seeing this thread was Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis. That place is awesome.
I wish I could get back there right now. Everytime I try to go on football weekends it's packed out the door.
Graduated in 05 and went in there for the O&W and they still remembered my order! Lol
And for those who know soccer:
If their steak in a sack is anything like what Ankar's serves in Chattanooga, I have GOT to stop there on my next trip down!!
Stay high, stay free
Gotta love Gus'.
1 Corinthians 16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
I ate at Gus's my first day of college back in 88. After many more times in college and years later, rose still remembered what I was going to get.
They also have to have twice the staff and work twice as hard to keep up. Peace out.
Is that a reference to Charlie the old Gus's delivery guy that used to wear a fury Russian style hat?
And they also do a lot more than twice the business.
Sunday lunch at Gus' after Saturday night on The Strip made college that much more memorable ...
Bingo. Dude was straight up awesome.
What happened to Charlie?
Gus' is a staple. Loved the place when I was there....
Hey Jersey Vol,
I feel your pain, but they have to make money sometime, I hope they do, because I want to keep institutions like that open and available for decades to come.
Obviously they're not making enough, or those places that have come & gone (Torch, Roman Room, Sam & Andy's, etc) would still be serving us there on the Strip.
I personally will happily pay their price on Gameday and hope they are there for years to come!
This. Do you know that when you swipe your card at Gus's, the money goes straight to the landlord and the landlord pays Gus when he gets ready?
These places on the strip have a hell of a time making ends meet. I'd give $20 for a turkey and smoked cheddar on game day to keep these places open another year. We are all still grieving over the Roman Room.
People think everything in Knoxville is given and should be cheap for their convenience.
I remember Pop Kampas telling me that mandatory meal plans killed the restaurants on the strip. Pop owned the Varsity. I like Gus' but its no Sam and Andys!
No it's not but it 's all we've got left. I swear it's a crime that the things we love can't survive on Cumberland.
God, how I wish we could go have George pour us a cold pitcher and order a Vol Burger or a turkey and cheddar! You never know how great you had it until the places you loved are gone, replaced by slaphappy BS holes in the wall run by people with no imagination serving up food you could get anywhere on any day of the year.
Sam & Andy's/The Roman Room was one of the places that made UT special. The whole community is lesser without it. If Gus' is even close, and I honestly don't know, do anything you can to preserve it. Please pay those prices and please pay even more (if needed).
Roast Beef and Smoked Cheddar on dark, just pay the man!
I loved Sam & Andy's and Gus'. Visited both very often.
Gotta love a place where you tip their 60 yr old delivery driver with bong rips. A day without a buzz is a day that never was. Is Charles still around these days?
My favorite haunts of the Strip (years past)
#10 - Old College Inn - girlfriend worked there, made for some tasty cheap eats...
#9. - Hawkeye's - lowered my GPA a full 1/4 point all on their own with late night 3 for 1 Long Island Iced Teas...
#8 - Sub Station II (#19 Sub, I believe, which had EVERY Meat on the Sub?) Good thing I was a poor college student, or I woulda
weighed more than Reggie White in college (I'm 5'8")
#7 - (Ivey's?) - Hope I got the name right - they had 10 FOR 1 drink special for awhile, no wonder I can't remember the name...
#6 - Pickle U Pub - at leat 10 decibels range of hearing loss on the Live bands upstairs...
#5 - Stefano's - Still a favorite, the whole wheat crust - Heaven, one slice at a time..
#4 - Varsity Inn - Many meals, many hours, really miss the place
#3 - Last Lap - Could honestly not tell you how many hours were spent here "studying" the art of pinball & pitchers"
#2 - Good Times Deli - Thanks, GUS!
#1 - The Roman Room / Sam &Andy's - Roman Room and Vol Burgers and George - S&A - Many nights this was the last stop of a LONG evening out on the Strip...
