As you all know the Super Bowl was last night.. My team (The Falcons) were not in it so i had absolutely no stake in the game but it is the most popular football game of the year and I just love to watch football. However, I am not one that has to cheer or a team, as they were my own. but, someone showed up at my house to watch the game, his team is the Panthers (who were clearly not even in the playoffs) and he cheered for the 9ers like they were his team and he had loved them since childhood. Jumping, yelling, clapping, screaming the whole game.. I thought it was a ridiculous act and some other friends were making fun of him because he really shouldn't care THAT much about the game since his team was not in it..
So, my question for you.. Do you have to get "invested" into a team to watch a football game or can you just enjoy a good football game whether you could care less who wins?
I hope what I'm asking makes sense..
im guessing he did have a ve$ted interest..
otherwise, no, i agree..no reason to get jacked up for someone else's team..
Haha good point.. I know for a fact there was no money involved. So let's exclude that from the discussion because I will cheer for anybody i bet on (if I gambled)
I enjoy when top teams play each other......I really dont watch bad football teams play unless it my own and that gets harder and harder every year since I am a Vols, Titans and Cowboys fan (+ Preds + Braves fan).
As for last night.......I could of cared less but found myself rooting (not outloud) for San Fran bc I didnt want the Ray Lewis media sunshine pumper machine going after the game and for no telling how long now.
Also more Bammers were on the Ravens and in their front office
Last night I was as indifferent as ever. Parts of me wanted the Niners to win while parts of me enjoyed seeing the the Ravens win. There are just a handful of teams that i would have pulled for aside from the Titans (Broncos and Manning for example). I don't get nearly as fired up when it's not my team but I do mildly get into it. I was pretty bummed the Broncos lost in the playoffs. However, had the Titans lost in that same fashion I would've been pissed!
And...like every year...I was watching the game while wearing my Titans shirt.
I don't have to be invested in a team, I just enjoy a good football game and I can turn off a bad ballgame in a heartbeat. FWIW, totally different if $ is on the line!
"Never take for granted what it means to be a Volunteer." Peyton Manning
What you asked makes perfect sense. I'm puzzled by him acting like that. I've seen several people do it and it's pretty irritating I think. I can watch a football game and always be interested without a team to root for, of course my interest level is higher when my Vols or Titans are playing. The only exception for me is if it's an NFL or College team that I have a strong hate for then sometimes i will watch the game while rooting for them to lose.
"Give him six" "We don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama" "Grit N Grind"
It is practically impossible for me to watch a sporting event without pulling for one of the teams. But that doesn't mean I go Vol crazy when pulling for said team. I didn't have a dog in the fight last night but I did pull for SF for the same reason as Samvolsam mentioned. I was just glad it turned out to be an interesting game.
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
I was pulling for the Ravens, hoping Ray would go out on top, but I am a die hard Titans fan. I can get excited for a game if the Titans aren't playing, but I will not be as emotionally invested, so I don't scream at the tv and lose my testimony every quarter, like during UT games. In other words, no, I can't get too hyped if my team isn't playing, but I do like watching a good football game.
1 Corinthians 16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Same here...also don't like the Ravens being a Titans fan
I am with you. Being a longtime Falcons fan and having a dear friend on the team, it hurt to see them get so close, and not be able to finish. But, have to agree that you shouldn't swing from the chandoliers or anything unless you vested$$$ in the game. Overkill to me, and extremely annoying sometimes.
How does a die hard Titans fan pull for Ray Lewis and the Ravens? The Ravens were the Titans biggest rival when the Titans were good.
I only get invested in a game if its good.... Certain big time plays may get a cheer or two out of me, but I hardly ever get invested enough to pull for one team or another. I just enjoy watching the game...
mostly I enjoy just watching the games.....
However when I am watching the Patriots in the Super Bowl....I have an interest in watching them lose......
I hate the Patriots.....
As a Nashville native I have become a Titans fan from day one they came to Tennessee. As a child I grew up loving the 49ers mainly because that was the team my dad was a fan of so i kind of would like to see them win. There are other teams that I would root for only for reason they have players that I enjoy watching and would like for those to be successful. The only reason I would be cheering for another team would be for some miraculous play or rooting for a underdog in close game. Maybe the dude just has a passion for football and has grown to love the 49ers, I guess you could just label him as a bandwagon fan
Welcome to the board Lt3. GO VOLS!
Thanks for posting, Leo, and from mobile!
Chime in more often. Friendly group here - friendliest UT community on the Interwebz by far. Folks are a little tense with NSD approaching Wednesday, but we have a big second family here.
Your team. All the time.
Yeah I've just been testing the waters for few months now. Yeah I have really noticed, which I like, whene someone gets off tune on someone or some topic it's gets stopped really quick. I love seeking everyone's thoughts and opinions without getting death threats like other boards do. Yes I will posting more now. I have to do mobile from work. IT guy likes to rat people out on web usage.
I'll play along Boomer. Actually, I like watching football, period. I usually find myself pulling for one team over another though. Not sure why that is, but I don't go to the point of yelling and screaming. I only do that with my beloved Vols. I can honestly admit that I do pull for some teams to lose more than I pull for the other team to win. Certain teams I will always root against.
Welcome to the board Leo. Might I recommend tuning in on Wednesday for the weekly "Wednesday with a Member" segment. Not sure who has it this week, but it will allow you to meet some of the regulars and get to know your fellow Vol fans.
I think the WWvolviking had been rescheduled to either Thursday or the following Wed. due to this Wed. being NSD. FYI.
I watch it as if I was watching film for the first time. I'm critical of and praise both teams.
Yep, it'll be Thursday this week.
Good point. I loved the rivalry between Eddie George and Ray Lewis back in the day and it caused me to loath the very existance of Ray Lewis. But, he's grown on me ever since. The guy is a leader of men and I can't help but love his passion for the game. And I'm a stickler for a good story. I'm not a fan of the Ravens by any means. And Jim Harbaugh just rubs me wrong. Which is why I was pulling for the Ravens.
And the Titans have forged some other serious rivalries over the years, such as the Steelers and Texans. Two teams I can't stand. But I understand your curiosity.
