I haven't heard a lot of talk about him on here, but I was wondering if anyone thinks he's a real candidate and if he's an acceptable hire for everyone.
I personally think there will be interest on both sides and think that he'll be a great hire as far as being a big name and great recruiter.
Would be a great hire. Defensive-minded, knows what it takes to coach in the SEC, and a relentless recruiter...everything a struggling football team needs.
He's actually an offensive guy as far as his coaching experience.
C'mon, guys! He's 28-9 and he's only in his third year. That's super considering he's still not even playing with a full roster of his guys. Things had slipped in Bobby's later years, in case no one noticed.
I think the jury is still out on Fisher, but all signs suggest he's an excellent coach. I don't think there is any way he would leave FSU, but if he would, I think he would be an absolute steal.
He seems like a good guy, but is an underachiever. With Miami down, FSU should own The state of Florida and be a real top 5 team now. Instead, they lost to an NC State team that UT beat. Not sure he is the answer.
I think he'd be a great hire. His play-calling is questionable at times, but he has talked about giving it up to his OC IIRC.
I don't know man. I agree with what you're saying about Bobby letting things slip in his late years but c'mon man, that wasn't just a horrible team he left Jimbo. Bobby's last 4yrs recruiting were #3, #21, #9 and #7. I think the coaching slipped and the program that Bowden built and the warmer weather should somewhat recruit for itself. He just seems not to have a killer instinct, I mean 5 of his 9 losses have came to the teams Virginia, UNC, Wake Forest and NC ST (twice) and most of those losses have came from conservative play calling. I just think he should be able to do more than he does with that team in a conference like the ACC with all of that talent. JMO though
I've been hearing his name frequently this week..
Good to hear. +1
Thanks, LWS. I'd imagine that he's pretty high on the Hart list, for good reason....
Some, if not most, head coaches need some time to learn on the job. It's not always automatic. Check Saban's early record. Or Fulmer's, for that matter. I almost compared Fisher's record at that point in his career to Phil's. As fast as Phil started, he didn't win the SEC until Peyton's senior year, Phil's fifth year as head coach.
I can see what you're saying and he may very well end up being one of the greats and he is a really really good recruiter but just not sold on him.......I don't know, maybe it's just the teams he's coached for and I personally subconsciously don't like him (LOL) it's just hard for me to say wow when I think of his name.
Good coach. Would be good hire
IT TAKES NO TALENT TO HUSTLE
He can recruit and would be an upgrade over CDD, but I don't think he is elite by any means. When I watch fsu play I see talented players, not a well coached team.
I think he'd be a great hire. I love how we're sitting around talking about a guy who is 28-9 in the past 3 years at a big time program and acting like that's not good enough for UT. I'd be incredibly happy with our next coach if Tennessee is averaging only 3 losses over the next three years. Plus, like RockyTop said above it takes some amount of time for a coach to find his stride. also, just because Bobby's last few years brought in talent, doesn't mean it was talent that was right for Jimbo's system or that they are the guys he would have gone after. People have gotten WAAAAYYYY too impatient lately and I think there are some Vol fans who, unless we hire Gruden, are going to be ticked off and complain that we could have done better.
Tennessee could average only 3 losses a season with Dooley at helm if we played in the EXTREMELY weak ACC. Also how can those players that Bowden brought not fit in to Jimbo's scheme? Jimbo was Bowden's OC for 3yrs before he took over so I would assume that most of those guys where right up Jimbo's alley?? As far as who we get, yes I would LOVE TO HAVE GRUDEN!! But if he's not in Knoxville next year I won't complain at all as long as the right hire is made. Just remember recruiting is huge part if the game but it don't mean $&@? if you can't coach them up. <-See Lane Kiffin
Also considering the money spent on this team by the fans just to see inferior coaching week-in and week-out......well I think we've been patient for some time now!
Yes, SOLID HIRE! That would be a good assessment. He just doesn't make me go wow but he doesn't make me think oh no either.
I was making more of a generalized statement about players fitting a scheme, but your right he was there. And I'm not sure Tennessee would have averaged 3 losses in the weak ACC under Dooley, and I dont think that FSU would have the same record over the past 3 years if Dooley was their coach.
My point, though, remains. Over the past week i've seen so many people talk about how if they dont make a home run hire then tennessee isn't going to be Tennessee again for a while. I agree that we need a great coach, and I think we do need a home run hire. However, i think there is a lot of unrealistic criticism towards some coaches that are really good coaches that could do well at tennessee.
Ok, maybe the Dooley line was little much.haha! I do agree that we are freakin out a little bit as a fan base but its not hard to freak out about it. I heard someone on here or the radio the other day and they said if we don't make the right hire this time how we could end up like Colorado and I'll have to say I agree with them. That's why I feel like we have to knock this hire out of the park. If its Jimbo I can handle it and I do think in the mind of a lot of people he is a home run hire and it would boost our stock in recruiting. I just hope whatever we do is the right thing.
LWS, are you hearing his name in legitimate source kind of circles, or just all the rumor stuff floating around. Also, do you think he has any legitimate interest in coming here, or is this a ploy to get a raise?
I definitely agree with you. I think that the next coach we get HAS to be a guy that's going to be here for the long haul. I'm not necessarily concerned as much with it being a HUGE hire right now as I am that it's the right hire. I do think we need a big hire, but I dont think if we miss out on Gruden, or we can't lure an established big time HC that it's necessarily the end of things. I'd love to be able to get a guy that's got great name recognition and a great W-L record at a big time program, but I'd rather get a guy that in 5 years is as important to us as Saban is at alabama
I wouldn't absolutely hate it like I would hate hiring Smart, Tommy T, or some no name but the guy is pretty overrated in my opinion. He can't even win the ACC at FSU in the conference's all time low ebb. I've never understood the infatuation with Jimbo
