I know this game is still months away from being played but i just keep getting this itch everytime i see their name on the schedule. I think we all know about Oregon the past few years under chip kelly and there super fast offense putting up huge amounts of points and the teams they have annihilated due to their shear speed. Then i think of the games theyve lost recently Auburn 2010, LSU 2011, Stanford 2012 they all have common similarities. All of those games were won at the line of scrimmage the opponents d lines blowing up Oregon's O-line and disrupting there one cut and gone running game. Now i know when we look at those three teams its gonna be hard to say that were gonna be in the conversation to win a NC but i still think we have the advantages to win this game.
First id like to point out that chip kelly is gone the guru and mind of their offense the past few years. I know they still have great athletes but when it comes to X's and O's and knowing how to call a perfect game not everyone can do that. Bobby Petrino's brother couldnt have near the same success with Arkansas as Bobby did the year before with alot of the same players. I know its to early to tell but we will definitely find out whether the new HC at Oregon has the same abilities that Chip Kelly does
Secondly the Trenches. I think we all know about our O-line and how this may be the best unit in the country built for big sec defensive lines. The Pac 12 is dominated mostly by spread option teams and so they have smaller faster d line men. I think we will completely dominate on the line in this game on offense. The d line which will be where we win or lose this game will be exciting to see. With Mount McCullers and Hood in the middle there those guys are gonna blow up there smaller offensive line and thats the key to stopping Oregon; stopping that inside run game and with those two in the backfield all day as long as or ends keep good contain we just have to hope our secondary can play well enough to keep them from making big plays and keeping drives alive.
lastly i think the weather and time will be another big factor. Practicing and conditioning in 90+ degrees in the deep south and then traveling up to Oregon where it will be alot cooler with the average highs being 76 degrees and humidity that averages 60% its gonna feel like spring ball temperatures for tennessee. And also kick time yes i know oregon is 3 hr time differnce but theres no way espn is gonna make this a primetime game out in the west with the eastern time kick off at 10pm so this will most likely be an afternoon game so it shouldnt be to hard of an adjustment for the vols to get up and whoop some tail.
Tell me what you guys think of this assessment and if you agree or disagree im excited for this next year to start and to me this is that upset win that will get the whole nation thinking orange and white. Go VOLS!
I think the teams that you mention beating UO also played more of a slower tempo type of offense, especially Stanford last year....I think with our new quick paced offence it will be very difficult to hang with UO on the (our) defensive side of the ball. That is unless we tweak our existing O as it is being described to be more of a clock eater. JMO
But I will be there to see it as it's only a 2 hour drive from my house! (without the annoying Oregon fans on the highway anyways)
Realistically, I think we get blown out by at least 4 TDs. Oregon's offense is way too complicated for a defense learning their 3rd scheme in 3 years.

Do I think we win this game? Nah. Do I think we keep this game closer than most people expect? Absolutely. While we haven't seen CBJ's coaching tactics on the field, with what I've been seeing so far I'm not sure this team will be "blown out" by anybody.
This game will be our coming out party. It is almost certainly going to be a nationally televised game. I think the days of seeing UT absolutely embarrassed on national TV are over. Who knows, maybe we will even surprise ourselves. I most definitely believe in CBJ and the direction he is taking our program.
Which is why I like the Butch/Jancek approach of promoting raw physicality, aggression, and never-ending pursuit.
No one out-schemes Oregon's offensive. You win by punching them in the mouth and big-boying them every chance you get.

Oregon will have very good SIZE _and_ speed on the D-Line this year. Don't be misled. Not as large as some SEC teams, but big enough, and extremely physical.
Going up-tempo vs. Oregon is suicide.
Hope those of you who come out enjoy your trip. I didn't make it out there last time, but by all accounts, Duck fans were well-treated. Hope to return the favor this year.
Is it football season yet? :-)
I'm afraid that Oregon will exploit our deficiency in team speed. Could get ugly.
we have our hotel room in eugene already. now finalizing the rest of the trip. want to spend about 7-10 days in the pacific NW.. and its always more fun to travel when a vols game is involved... will be even better if we are competitive...
This sums it up nicely. Remember all those articles about how we can't tackle in space? Oregon are experts at forcing matchups and making you tackle their speedsters in space - all the while playing at a ultra fast pace. Ugh.
"Give him six" "We don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama" "Grit N Grind"
It's possible to pull it off!
I've been watching Butch ball all winter long and I think fans are going to be a bit surprised. Is it fast tempo? Yes. But it's nothing like last year where it was blow up the scoreboard. This offense can burn up clock. It's very very focused on the run and the short passing game. The idea is to keep the other defense always moving, but yet at the same time control the game. So, I could definitely see the strategy being run heavy and wearing the Ducks down this game. With the lack of speed Wes and others keep talking about this is the only way I can see to win.
This is also going to be a good testament to the conditioning program that CBJ has instituted. Remember a few years ago when we played them to the second half and everything was looking good in a close game? Then boom the lights went out and next thing you know we were blown out? Let's hope the new conditioning gets rid of the doggone getting gassed problem by the second half we have been plagued with for the last three years.
As a sidenote, I ran into an Oregon fan in Maryville at the Cracker Barrel the last time they played at Neyland and he was one of the nicest fans I have ever met. He was excited to be in Tennessee and to be at Neyland. Was absolutely awed we had a stadium that fit 100,000 people. Was a very nice guy. Of course, he was confident his team would win, but he completely respected our tradition and history. If all Ducks fans are like that should be a good trip for those who can make it out there.
^^^this^^^ OP, I like your optimism, but Oregon is entirely too fast for us, at every level. Their WRs and RBs are faster than our DBs, their TEs and H-backs are much faster than our linebackers, and their QB has laser precision accuracy as well as deceptive athleticism. and the past couple of years, we've seen what happened to our D against dual-threat QBs. (It hasn't been pretty) Defensively, our O-Line will definitely have an advantage against their front 7 size wise, but they are so much faster than us that it might not even make a difference. Their secondary is also much more experienced (and again, faster) than our wide outs and running backs.
Oregon wins 38-17. JMO. Not being a troll, I'm just being real.
