A thought for Vol fans:
Dooley is not a villain. He is not the enemy. He is a coach that has not been able to win enough games to keep his job. But he DID do an INCREDIBLE job of stabilizing our program, upgrading our roster, and setting us up for future success.
He isn't the guy. That has become fairly evident. But he deserves our gratitude. He has done a great job of getting us in a better place so that we have something to sell to the next guy.
If Wes says the die has been cast, I believe it. We don't have to keep calling for his termination. It is imminent.
Let's support him and this team for the rest of the season and express our gratitude for what he HAS done (which has been significant) while in Knoxville. We took a chance on him, but he took a chance on us, too.
GREAT post Tex!
"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!
Agreed great post +1
I agree 100%. +1
Coach D did a good job stabilizing the program and bringing some integrety back to Vol football. However, he has to be one of the unluckiest coaches in history. He never got a break in a close game or a good call from some terrible refs. I applaude his efforts although he must take the blame for Coach S and the terrible defense that has probably cost him his job. Coach D will land on his feet and will be successful in his future. Good luck Coach Dooley.
Great post. +1
By all accounts Dooley is a great man and first class human being. I personally hope he gets some kind of role within the AD or even the university bc I feel as if he could be a valuable asset to the University. Regardless, I'm thankful for his time here and I wish him nothing but the best in the future.
I think Dooley is probably a great high-level assistant coach - more a COO type than a CEO - and that is why Saban kept him around for six years. Dooley is good at the administrative and daily behind the scenes stuff but not the guy you want leading the team day-to-day. He did an excellent job stabilizing things and a good job rebuilding the roster but leading an organization doesn't seem to be his strength.
Coach Dooley is a very likable guy, and I truly appreciate everything he's done for the program. I have no ill will towards him and I wish him and his family the best of luck with what ever the future holds for them. In my mind, the most lasting mark on the program that he will leave us with, is the VFL program, which I'll always consider him a part of.
Great post. Was thinking about posting something similar but you have saved me the typing. +1
Thanks to Coach Dooley for helping us through this mess. Wish you could have won more because I think you definitely thought this job was an end job not a stepping stone.
Great post!! +1
Dooley just made $2 mill a year for 3 yrs and will get $5 mill more failing. We owe him nothing. I don't hate him I just want him to go away.
Just for some perspective at the half I was like maybe they should keep him and get a new DC. At the end of the game I realized he is what he is no more no less. Now he's a multi millionaire for sucking.
When the day does come that Tennessee is back on top of the rankings; none of us should ever forget that though that current coach will be credited with the wins, it was Derek Dooley who got us out of the utter rubble and gave our new coach (or coaches) a shot at a future. Thank you Coach Dooley for your commitment and dedication to our program.
History will show what he meant to Tennessee. I agree with this original poster. Dooley has set the program where the next coach will not fail.
2 down votes seriously. Is this a convent? I didn't say tar and feather him or make fun of his kids. The guy is set up for life and y'all are acting like he did this job out of charity. Fire me and give me $5 mill I'll do cartwheels.
As much as I wanted a change, I still like Dooley as a person and wish him well. I will give him an ovation for coming in when others would not and trying to turn us back around after Kiffin. I just hope we can get a replacement that the fan base can unite around. We need to start winning to best bring the fans together but i think a "big" hire will start the proces.
When is Dooley's presser today?
You are failing to understand the spirit of this thread. No one here is claiming that Dooley should stay or that he is the next Robert Neyland. What we are saying is that he was willing to come here and take a chance on this program when no one else would, even for the handsome reward we were offering. He risked his professional reputation and it didn't pan out for us or for him. But what he DID do is put out the dumpster fire, recruit SEC level talent, stabilize the locker room, and give valuable input on facilities.
Does he deserve to be fired? Yes. Does he deserve to be derided? No. Respect the man and appreciate him for what he DID do and fire him for what he didn't. Derek Dooley has put us in a situation where we can hire the kind of coach that we COULDN'T during the last coaching search.
You may recall that Muschamp turned us down in the last search citing that it was a 6 year rebuilding process. ESPN now calls us one of the top open jobs in the country because you can walk in and win quickly... after 3 years. Got to give credit where credit is due. As far as I'm concerned, you can keep your vitriol. It does not change anything in the situation at all. I will happily down vote posts that treat the man as though he is a villain worthy of your anger. In my opinion, quite frankly, It is as simple as this: He was the right guy to stabilize a bad situation but isn't the right guy to move us forward. Time to appreciate what he did for us and move on. These were not lost years. This was necessary and incredibly valuable for our program and the man earned his paycheck.
I'm sad about this in some aspects.
I really think he bought into the program and the history and would have been a Vol for Life if he had been successful. Coming out wearing those orange pants spoke volumes to me. I don't think it was ever a gimmick. I truly truly hoped he'd be the man for the next 20 years.
I wish him the best.
Glad to see this guys! I hope the fan base stays classy with all this. Dooley didn't win us many games but he clearly got our train wreck of a program back on track with a solid roster and off probation. I wish Dooley nothing but the best in his future. I believe he could be a decent coach at the right place. I think he will learn from a lot from his failures here. But most of all, hopefully his luck will do a 180. I have never seen a coach get so many bad breaks!
His weekly press conference is scheduled for noon Eastern time.

Very good post.
Dooley is a great person and he has done a lot to place a foundation for the program. I'm sure he will find a job somewhere and will be fine, and I wish him nothing but the best.
