In the 2nd Half of Five SEC Game:
Tennessee has had 14 Opportunities to tie or take the lead. They have failed to score in all 14. Not just do what it takes to tie or take the lead... score at all.
They have run the ball a total of 19 times during those drives.
They have passed the ball 37 times during those drive.
Those plays have gone for 12 first downs.
They have resulted in 6 turnovers.
Six of the drives resulted in 3 & Outs'.
Only two drives went for more than 1 first down.
The longest drive was 3:38 (final drive against USCe)
Average time of each drive was 1:47 (with the two final drives against USCe & UGA removed as outliers)
I borrowed this from TOS. Hope they don't mind but it's not like this is secret info.
Doesn't sound like the only problem is D
Really interesting stats.
6 three and outs plus 6 TO's is just pathetic. That is 85% of crunch time drives resulting in a TO or just completely dead drives. Would be curious to see the yards per carry rushing.
Probably decent run stats, trouble is Chaney and his pass happy flip chart. Defense getting gashed, throw the ball nearly every down? Why not try a playaction pass on 1st down with a back as a hot read out of the back field? With luck medium gain to the back. Run second down, use whatever play that is the same formation as the best run you've had all game, run it some other gap from the that formation after motioning into that play flipped. 1st down or 3rd and short. 3rd an short, QB option delay hand off or short pass to the flats.
If nothing else get a kick out of what i wrote. The whole time in my head has been the coach from waterboy drawing up that play where he fakes himself out on the chalkboard.
That is why I am really curious about the YPC, because running 35% of the time when you are losing could be a misleading stat. Personally, I think the biggest thing these stats show is how much we miss 21 on third downs.
#21 and Arnett.
Arnett IMHO wasn't a great recruit he was touted to be, he might ahve been this year, but I can't remember a single big time catch out of him. I'm sure he caught some balls, but Da'Rick is the one who we miss the most. Who'd ahve thought we'd be saying that at the start of the season? I for one thought we'd hang 30+ a game and win most of our games on the ability of our Offense to score points. You know like Peytons Colts teams did for years.
Instead the QB and WR's have taken turns goofing up this play or that and just not being on the same page when they needed to be. Defense has so many holes there is probably some new cheese out that named for the multitude of holes.
So looking forward to these next 4 games, loaded down with optimism at winning out and going Bowling. Easy, not really, not with how we've played for the last month and half. However what I will hang my hat on without looking up the stats, I think we won't face a top 30 defense the rest of the way, could be wrong, but I have to think our OL will lead the way to Victory over each opponent. Just hope Chaney doesn't snatch Defeat from the jaws of Victory with some of his characteristic ???WTH???!!! play calling from one drive tot he next. Just dont get how he can call a perfect drive that scores a TD, then next drive go 3 and out after calling plays not even in the same zipcode as the last drive.
Derek Dooley on wide receiver Zach Rogers and OL Tiny Richardson
UT head football coach Derek Dooley talks about sophomore offensive lineman Antonio "Tiny" Richardson Monday. Richardson tweeted after the South Carolina game, "I want to apologize for that last play" in reference to Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney getting through to Bray and causing a fumble.
UT head football coach Derek Dooley had high praise for wide receiver Zach Rogers on Monday during his regular weekly press conference.
His comments about Tiny are excellent.
