I don't think the think the face plants the 'Zo teams have launched in the last 2 Decembers are any accident.
Hard to blame all of the failures on Maymon this year and fill in the blank absence next year. At some point Tennessee basketball needs to return to better than the middle of the pack in a bad basketball league. It is KY and FL and the Sisters of the Poor make up the rest. No reason for UT to be less than the 3 or 4th team in this league every year. If Stokes and McCrae leave early I can already hear the excuse machines churning in overdrive. Year 3 of the 'Zo Martin experiment will be enough to judge. He must be successful or the final piece of the Mike Hamilton misfit puzzle can be removed.
"Give him six" "We don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama" "Grit N Grind"
I mean that Maymonm injury had nothing at all to do with the lack of success. All Martin's fault, And, just think, year in and year out TN has competed for titles like KY and FL. Oh wait, not until Pearl was here did we even compete for tournament bids then Martin had to deal with a young team and his two best players leaving early, Harris and Hopson, which led to a slow start.
Martin walked into a tough spot and done very well with what he inherited, his team could of went to the dance two years in a row but just barely missed it. If there is a person out there who does not see the job he has done then they need to follow another sport.

I was wondering when this junk would start up again...
As a matter of fact TN has competed for and won SEC titles before Pearl. How do you think we built a 25,000 seat arena? Mears, Devoe, Green, and Pearl all won the league. Tennessee has historically been the second best team in the league behind KY until Wade Houston and Buzz Peterson tried to destroy the program. UT still in the face of poor on the court performance is in the top 10 in attendance behind the all-time monster programs in college b'ball. We deserve better and and have had better. The ball is in CCM's court to make or break his career. Is 1 win over GA or 'Bama too much to ask?
But, we had went through some dark years dark years before Pearl, and you gotta remember that. I am only 29, so i remember Wade and Buzz, and i can remember the excitement that Pearl brought. yes, there was Green, but I can also remember the need for change with Pearl.
And, no we do not deserve better than Martin, he is heck of a coach and a lot of people will tell you that.
I usually do not respond to negative posts, but I have sat here all year and watched our coach slammed by these fans, and he did a heck of a job coaching this year.
Look at the team he has built, he has done a good job recruiting, got us into Memphis. He represents this program with integrity and teaches our young men to be tough. He did not walk into a good situation and still managed to begin to build a team. We are two controversial decision away from dancing his first two years.
People who are unhappy need to check expectations, because when was the last time we won anything in basketball when it was not regular season. We are not Kentucky. We are not Florida. Hell, even Arkansas has won a national championship. Martin is building a great foundation. He won 20 games this year. We had some tough losses, but you can see this team responds to him.
I just do not get it. Maybe I am too young to remember TN basketball when it won a lot of titles. but i do remember Wade and Buzz, and i know that i would rather have Martin.
Btw, I give you a +1 because i know how people react to post like this. I rather have discussion than a downvote party. I disagree but i still respect that you feel the way you do.
In the early season games we struggled in, and lost, we scored in the 40's. After all the strides we made down the stretch, we score in the 40's against bama. PG is our problem, and there is really no debate about it. That issue wont be resolved next year. CCM needs to bend his scheme to our personel instead of trying to cram a square peg in a round hole
I do appreciate the opportunity for civil discourse. I take b'ball more seriously than many on this board. You can tell by the topics posted on the day of the NCAA tourney brackets. More interest in 16 year olds in VA and their possible football careers in 2015 than the state of our own basketball team. If this were a real basketball school the fire would be approaching boil on CCM. 3 years is plenty of time to demostrate a positive direction in hoops. Next season will tell the tale.
How can you be so sure of a coach that has never ever been in the NCAA tournament. I can't grasp how one could be so optimistic about Cuonzo at all. There's no evidence that he is going to win here, none at all.
That is one thing we can strongly agree on: next year is HUGE.
I am just of the opinion that with the mess he walked into, the injury to Maymon, and the improvement shown on the back half of the schedule that Martin has shown that he has a lot of potential.
If TN continues to show growth and maturity, next year could be a heck of a ride.
You also have to forgive me, I tend to be the eternal optimist and see the good, so part of me believes in everyone. I do really believe in Martin though, have since the first day we hired him.
I don't agree with everything you posted but I do think we need to see significant improvement next year. This year we are a middle of the pack team in a down conference year without a significant road win. Next year I expect that we are debating our seed rather than debating if we are in. It's time for CCM to make some noise.
He won 20 games this year. He won 18 a year ago. Given the situation he inherited, i think that is pretty good. Plus, you can make a strong case that two years in a row he should be dancing, not going to NIT. If the committee had picked differently then there is not a person on this board who would have complained.
Plus, his team improved A LOT over the course of this year. I can evaluate a coach on progression. Look at national snub lists, we are number one on a lot. We should have made the tournament this year, but we barely missed it.
He has a lot returning next year, and a daggum good recruiting class coming in. If he cannot win next year then call me out and i will eat my words. However, I would guarantee a lot that we make the tournament.

There are only four answers to any question: Yes, No, I don't know, or the Correct Answer.
I think its a given that next year we will be a pretty solid team. My problem is, after next year, we will lose pretty much our entire team. Maymon, McRae, Golden will all for sure be gone. Stokes will more than likely be gone. If Hubbs lives up to his billing, he will likely be one and done. That leaves us with Moore, Richardson, Reese, Yemi, Q, Davis, Landry, and possibly Thompson. I don't see that group winning very many games at all. Thats why, to me, how we recruit next year is way more important if 'Zo wants to stay our coach for much longer.
I normally agree with that Alex, but i looked at his post count first. i think this is a very valid conversation to have.
A lot of people are upset, and part of feeling that passion is discussion.
I for one am the biggest Martin fan there is, so i believe that we should have a pro/con conversation about him, just like this one. I think it is unfair to label someone a troll because they have high standards and negative opinions that I disagree strongly with.
This is why people don't post on this board as much as they should. The OP thinks that Cuonzo hasn't performed enough to be completely safe, and suddenly the OP becomes a troll? Come on man
Edit: This was a reply to Alex's post

Well, different strokes for different folks, I s'pose. I live on the KY line, and if they're a "real basketball school" that's representative, then a bunch of them (a minority, I'm sure, but they're vocal) want to even fire Cal right now. If KY, UNC, Kansas, Duke and IN (& throw in UCLA, too) are all "real basketball schools," I note they all have one HUGE thing in common: NONE of them is a "real" football school.
Do I want to see us at least make it to a Final Four in the men's game? Yes. However, if the only way to do that is to sell out our football "religion" for basketball, I (and most of us, I think) just am not willing to make that trade.
"Bravely taking to his feet, he beat a very brave retreat." Sir Robin's Minstrels.
I think you express some of the faulty reasoning that is rampant in the VolNation, that you cannot be both successful in hoops and football. I believe you can and there is proof at FL, Ohio St, Bama, Wisc, Texas, Ok, and many more. Winning in basketball does not mean you give up on football. Baskets will always be 2nd at Tennessee, but it can still be a very respectable program with plenty of national attention. I want the team to win. I don't care who the coach is.
