I think we need to finally recognize Mike Hamilton for what he really accomplished at UT. We now have the best facilities in the conference including our new practice facility and renovated stadium and Thompson Bowling Arena. He alos hired us a great basketball and baseball coach and a football coach with the highest integrity who I am sure will ultimately build a winning program at UT. Also, his hiring of Lane Kiffin would be a stroke of genuis if a vacancy had not suddenly appeared at USC. I am sure the USC fans will be glad to testify to Kiffin's football savy as they continue to excel under tremendous constraints. Why have UT fans been so upset with Hamilton? Primarily because he had the guts to remove a popular football coach that was quickly leading Tennessee into football mediocracy. The Tennessee athletic programs have suffered some dark days but it is now time to stop whinning and complaining and start supporting all our coaches and stident athletes because they should all be VFL's
He didn't hire Serrano.
He's the reason we're where we are in football, which is enough reason to fire him. He made a great hire with Cuonzo.
This cannot be a serious post. I'm not going to argue, I just can't believe this post.
Great man. Great fundraiser. Poor administrator.

Mike Hamilton did ALL the legwork on Serrano. That was his guy from day 1.
Serrano is a Hamilton hire.

I called Hamilton on the day UT hired Serrano and asked him for comment.
He told me that while Serrano was his choice from day 1, he didn't want to comment because "I want people to give the guy a chance."
Classy guy, that Mike Hamilton.

And honestly ppl, can you really blame all this Kiffin stuff on him?!? He absolutely had no idea what what transpire in that year and there is no AD in the country that wouldn't have made that hire
Mike is making a greater difference doing what he is doing. He is a great man of God with supreme moral fiber. I will not trash him. His handling of Fulmer, hiring and handling of Kiffin, PR blunders and sabotaging last year's basketball final run are areas where he deserves some blame but I have written thousands of words on that. I wish him well in life. My two cents were shared. We are better off and so is the world with him where he is.
End of my words on MH. Long live Dave Hart!
There is no question that Mike Hamilton blundered his way through public relations. No question. But I have said from the beginning that his hires were amazing. Absolutely amazing. Bruce Pearl, Lane Kiffin (I know how it turned out, but look what he is doing at SC - not bad), Derek Dooley, Cuonzo Martin, and Dave Serrano(ish). That is pretty impressive in terms of talent evaluation and you've got to give the man his due on that. Period.
He was a NIGHTMARE with PR, but his instincts hiring coaches was actually pretty spot on.
MIke Hamilton is the reason we are where we are today. The good and the bad!
I have to respectfully disagree on Kiffin being a good coach.
The Track and field and swimming programs are in shambles.
Lack of supervision of Kiffin and Pearl NCAA violations.
Greed drove boosters away ran off the loyal die hard fans. (waiting list for seaon tickets replaced by empty seats)
He caved to the pressure to fire Fulmer! (SURE WOULD LIKE SOME OF THE "football mediocracy" NOW!
The Capital projects and facilities have allowed us to recruit in the top 20 when we only a top 50 program.
Easy to monday morning quarterback.
In the long run after emotions cool, Hamilton will be known as a very good AD. No man is mistake free in his business decisions and bats a 1000. Overall, Pat was already here, football was doing well, Bruce was a good coach, and Martin / Serrano seems to be excellent so far. But at UT, your only as good at the moment as football goes. Football is the money machine and what UT is known for. (Pat would argue that). Unfortunately, when Hammy did strike out, it was on the sacred sport. The Fulmer/Kiffin/Dooley thing was too much and the jury is still out. If Dooley does well, he will cement his place as a great AD. If not, many will not recognize the many good things he accomplished.
Nothing gets emotions running like a discussion of Mike Hamilton. He did some really good things but also had too many mistakes. When you are in a high profile position you cannot have a lot of mud on you, as he did. The scandals and follies in football and basketball - and his mishandling of Pearl - were ultimately too much for him to overcome and maintain credibility.
As for the comment about the facilities, its interesting to note that while Hart has praised the facilities for fans, he has been openly critical of the state of the facilities for the athletes and has redirected money toward improving the athlete's facilities.
Lol! Completely OT, but when I saw the thread title for some reason I thought of the scene in Old School when Will Ferrell is outside working on the red dragon and yells "Hey, Mike!" to his neighbor..... Completely random, I know :)
The fulmer extension and then fire was so bad that I can't get past it. Hamilton should have stepped up after 2005.
Right you are. Nice +1 and welcome.
-2 for giving a guy a +1. Interesting. I gave him the plus 1 for the last line. I've actually met Mike and he is a really great guy,. I thought Kiffin and Cuonzo were good hires when they were hired and I still do. In hindsight, Kiffin should have been managed better from the start. Making UT USC East should have been halted before it started and his unwillingness to promote tradition should have been addressed, among other things. I thought Dooley was a good hire at the time, under the circumstances. There is way too much second guessing without real information on the Dooley hire, like what coaches had legitimate interest in the job, if there was interest, how much money was UT gonna have to pay, etc. Serrano was a good hire. Of course Mike also hired Raleigh. This is just my perception, perhaps the reality is different, but it seemed like Mike's interest and expertise was in fundraising and some coaches need to be managed more than others.
I am of the opinion that you can't judge Mike Hamilton on any of the hires that were made when he was the AD. If I recall we paid lots and lots of money to a consulting firm to find the coaches that were hired. While I dont think anyone can deny the good things that he was able to accomplish with the facility upgrades, I for one make my judgement on how he handled the coaches once they were hired. I personally place all of the multiple sport NCAA mess on his shoulders along with the collapse of the other smaller sports that happened on his watch. The comment on Pearl before the tourney last year was also inexcusable IMO.
