This has been on my mind a lot because one of my buddies recently "became" an Ohio State "fan."
I'm 19 years old. The last time Tennessee won the SEC, I was in preschool. I've only been alive long enough to remember three 10-win seasons. ('03, '04, '07) Every single one of my friends either roots for Alabama, LSU, Georgia, or Ohio State. There were a few Oregon "fans" in my high school but most of everybody cheered for Bama. Why? Kids like winners. The "Xbox Generation" as we're affectionately called doesn't have time to root for a losing team. We care more about our K/D spread on Call of Duty or our win % on 2K than we do about college football. It doesn't really matter to us. Trust me, your average 18 or 19 year old is probably too busy drinking himself into a stupor and stumbling into the bedroom with some half-wit bimbo on a Friday night to watch - much less care about - college ball. And when you try and make us care about a team that's losing all the time? Forget it. That's not "cool" to us. We're too "good" for that. So just about every single person in my high school (and now at my college, as sad as it is) was, and is, a "Bama fan." Except me...I'm the anomaly.
Why? Because I'm a Vol. 100%. Every second of every minute of every hour of every day. I am a Tennessee Vol through thick and thin. My blood is straight up Pantone 151 and I wouldn't have it any other way. One of the many things I appreciate my father doing for me is instilling in me a fire for UT sports (football in particular) that is inextinguishable. I don't care that we haven't won a bowl game in 5 years, I don't care that we've had 4 head coaches since '08, I don't care that every single one of my friends ceaselessly ridicules me for rooting for a "crappy" team and I don't care that we haven't won the SEC since dinosaurs were walking the Earth. I don't care. This is my team. I will be in Knoxville on August 31st against Austin Peay to officially christen the Butch Jones era because I love this team. I love this program. I was just as much of a Tennessee fan on November 26th 2011 when we lost to UK as I will be when Butch is hoisting up that National Championship trophy here in a few years. Tennessee football is part of who I am as a man, and that will never change.
Why do I say this? To give you hope. Most of you probably think UT is lost on this generation. That's not necessarily true. Amid the cadre of adolescents that have chosen the "flavor of the month" (UGA, 'Bama, Oregon, etc...) there are still those of us that have hung on. Even though we've never really seen Tennessee be what it's supposed to be, we've still hung on. We stand with you. Don't give up hope and think that young Vol faithful are extinct. We're still out here...and in my case, out here loud and proud.
Stay strong my friends...good tidings are coming our way
"What did he do? All he did was score!" - John Ward
I am 18 and will be going to MTSU next year to become a pilot (Tennessee doesn't offer a flight program or else i would be attending there) and i am one of the only true Tennessee fans that graduated with me. Most of the others are Tennessee fans because they will be attending there in the fall but were formally fans of Bama, Florida, and other schools that were winning and feel like they have to become Tn fans. I know that feeling when everybody around you trash talks your school but we will rise to the top!
If you were fishing for upvotes you had mine when you said the above. +1 young man and yes GO VOLS!
Its not a stupid question until you ask it.
I'm 23 myself, and myself and friend have said for few years now we felt like we were the last part of a dying breed. I asked a 17 year old kid last year who his favorite Vol of all time was and he said Eric Berry. He then asked me the same, and I replied with Al Wilson. He gave me an awkward look, and it took me a second to realize he had no idea who he was.
I'm not that old, but when you comp[are me to 18 yr olds i guess i'm getting old..(37)
It's a good thing i read the WHOLE post I was ready to ignore you and downvote you as a knee jerk reaction. I can't stand bandwagon fans, picking a winner out of winners for winning sake is just troubling. No wonder many young people today are so danged annoying with entitlement issues. /soapbox
+1 and yes thank you for giving me hope for the future..
/soapbox Now if only the politically weak minded would get a clue, nothing is free, even if it says free your giving up something to obtain it.

Dear Fear Smokey,
GO VOLS! +1 BAZILLION
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
Awesome! As long ago as you make it sound, and as long ago as it was, it seems like it was just yesterday when I remember John Ward making his curtain call the best ever......"and the National Champion is clad in Big Orange!" Those were the days! Enjoy your youth bro and buckle up because Butch is about give us one helluva ride back to the top, were we belong! Brick by brick! GO VOLS!
Great post +1. 38 days
Well said my young friend. +1 from an old codger.
IT TAKES NO TALENT TO HUSTLE
I would give you all of upvotes for the day if I could, young man. A very eloquent, passionate post. That gives me hope not just for the future of UT sports, but of your generation in general.
I tip my cap to you, young scribe, for your Orange blood and your wonderful way with words.
Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.
Plus 1 from a old, very old Vol fan.
Best. Post. Ever OP.
Great post, my friend. It is at +28 right now and the sky is the limit.
I'm an old dude and when I went to UT, Bill Battle was still the coach and despite having Condredge Holloway at quarterback, we weren't very good. Exciting yes, good, no!
But like you, I never had any doubt the Vols would rise again. During the dark days of Johnny Majors' never ending five year rebuilding program, I remember making myself a silent promise. If the football gods ever brought us back, and we could win just one national championship in my lifetime, I would die a happy man. I was still young when I first made the pledge!
Many years later, of course, it happened.
Now I'm getting greedy. I want another one.
And you know what? I still believe. It will happen. Again.
I'm 55 and I remember when they came out with dinosaurs. My first vivid Vol memory was the 68 game versus Georgia on ABC. It was John Ward's first call, even though I didn't hear it. I've been a Vol from that day forward, highest highs and lowest lows.
We live in a frontrunner world. Good to know there are young ones coming on to carry the torch.
Atta boy... +1. Nothing better than a lot of 151.
Great post! My sisters 12 year old step son is a Bama fan because its the cool thing to do. His dad was born and raised in Arkansas and is a Razorbacks fan and actually let's him wear that Bama crap. I pick on the kid all the time and his only response is "don't bring up the past". He doesn't have a clue about our glory days.
I'm 36... We're not getting old. Go Vols!
Best thing to come out of Alabama: I-59 North
Great post young man. I am 64 years old and became a VOL fan in 1964. We have seen many good times and many bad times in that span. I can tell you that I had the misfortune of living in Fairhope Alabama for the past 9 years. I never once failed to wear my ORANGE. I had a neighbor tell me that if they quit making orange clothes I would be naked. I have a daughter that teaches in Knoxville after graduating from UT with her masters. She attends every game with me and will not leave the stadium until The Tennessee Waltz is complete. We are Vol fans, we will always be Vol fans, and we are extremely proud to have a fellow VOL FAN LIKE YOU! Keep your head up, wear your colors proiudly, and enjoy the RISE TO THE TOP with us. I have seen the view and promise you will like it!
Cool, very cool... You had me at 19 year old bimbos on Fri nites... Those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end.. Enjoy your youth, you have a bright future ahead with your mindset, passion, and truth...
Go Vols, BTW, where do you hang out on Fridays?????
I hope my sons have the same fire in their belly as you do when they get older!!
