Was it the setbacks from Kiffin and Dooley, or does it go deeper? Dooley seems to be a lot like Mike Sherman, where he can't win, but he left Tennessee in a better position than how he inherited it.
SEC SEC SEC!!!
He left it better but I honestly think he couldnt get anybody to play for him the players didnt respect him, and I also think he was hard to work for. 7 coaches dont leave for no reason

Poor university leadership that thought UT football was too big to fail. That's what lies at the bottom of the pile.
Thank you govols011. Does the AD have any say in the hiring process of your HC, or is it big money alumni like us? I really hope you get a great coach, I want to see Tennessee and A&M playing for the SECCG soon.
Dooley knew how to make a good gameplan going into a game, but couldn't motivate or make half time adjustments ever. Kiffin set the program back a few years with all the sanctions and depleted roster he left with us. Dooley righted the ship, and for that I am almost thankful
Too complicated for a short answer, but I'll try. Fulmer got lazy, quit recruiting, made a terrible OC hire and got himself fired. Kiffin swooped in, got us in trouble, recruited one class that all quit or went to jail and skipped out in the middle of the night amid burning mattresses. Dooley did his best, but wasn't up to the job on Saturdays. His DC hire put the last nail in his orange coffin.
That's exactly how I felt when Sherman left. Franchione set us back ten years. I will always have a deep seated hate for Franchione.
Is the AD at all to blame?
Pretty much spot on ^^^^^^^
The AD who fired Fulmer and hired both Kiffin and Dooley is no longer with the university, so you really can't lay blame on the current administration.

Thanks tntoak. Who do you guys want to be hired? Is there a favorite? I still think Fedora would be a great hire.
This really sums up 95% of it. Situation is kinda like aTm. With the right coaching hire, it could get turned around quickly. I don't think we've recruited quite as good as aTm though....
Yes, I blame Hamilton bigtime, though not for firing Fulmer, who deserved it. His attempt to hit a home run with the Kiffin hire was a strikeout. That's Monday morning quarterbacking, but most people who are any kind of judge of character would have picked up on Kiffin's shiftiness and lack of morals during a standard interview.

It seems like a lot of Vols like Charlie Strong. He's a great coach, but I think Fedora would work out better. Just my opinion though.
Hard to recruit on aTm's level when you've gone 7-6, 6-7, 5-7, and either 4-8 or 5-7 in consecutive years. That being said, if UT gets a splash hire in here who can shore up the current recruiting class and also pull a few other highly-touted prospects into the fold, he would have a significantly easier path to winning seasons than Dooley inherited.
I think that Tennessee can turn the corner much faster than we did because of the historic program. I'm an Aggie at heart, but I also love Tennessee.
With a big hire kids like Vonn Bell and Green are probably ours, this a huge decision for Hart
Wow this really couldn't have been put any better... I blame Pete Carrol for leaving USC
I don't believe aTm has had more than 8 wins in a while. I may be mistaken, but agree they've not hit bottom like TN.
Spot on + at the same time better coaching hires in SEC state schools (GA, LA, SC, UA, AK) keeping their state talent away from UT which has to rely heavily on out of state talent...
