We're getting some recruits, but I'm concerned about getting the "big boys" to sign under Jones. He is obviously due his time, but wondering everyone's thoughts? Hopefully he can coach up the 3 stars and use his motivational skills to compete against the SEC... But 3 stars against 5 stars won't consistently win with our schedule...
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Fair question and I think one we are all waiting to see.
We will get 3 stars until we start winning. We wont out recruit Florida or Alabama until we beat them. Why would any big recruit really want to come here? I'm not being negative by saying this but 18 year olds want to win. Just look at Vanderbilt's past recruiting and you can follow the trend.
"Count it down with me. Five, four, three, two, one.
The national champion is clad in Big Orange!"
I think this years class is a wash. We really can't judge his first class till the 2014 class. He came in pretty late in this years class to be judged.
We need to remember he has only been here two weeks and is making up all kinds of lost ground from the last staff.
Actually I think he has done pretty well thus far. I'm not judging him just by the recruits he is getting but also by those he is letting go and I agree with the ones he has told to look elsewhere. I also agree with his philosophy of recruiting by numbers so that you always have an adequate supply of players at any one position. We can win with 3 star players, we can win championships when 4 and 5 star guys are added. But we must start winning first. When we do that and Jones build credibility the 4 and 5 stars will come.
Vonn Bell, Marquez North, Derrick Green... If we go 0 for 3 with those guys then there will be reason for concern. We really need to get all 3, and there is little doubt in my mind if we got Charlie Strong we would get all 3...
Butch Jones was nobody's 1st choice or even 2nd or 3rd, and the fact is his name alone isn't going to bring in 4 or 5 stars. We need to rely on the staff, and pray to good he wins next year. If he doesn't we will keep drifting further into irrelevance.
Gave you a +1 to offset the DV's. Nothing wrong with your post. We all want to see some 4 and 5 stars but I'm not going to question CBJ and staff's evalutations of players until I see them on the field.
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
Oh jeez... did you just "year zero" us... noooo
He's been our coach for how long? Two whole weeks and no 4 and 5 stars??? Fire him now!!!
If we recruited King Kong and he was a 3*?????
Jersey +1, knee jerk reactions starting already
Yeah, not to beat a dead horse, but this is really an overreaction to be 'concerned' after only two weeks. I think you're forgetting that half of his recruiting job was to keep the guys around who were committed in addition to scouting, evaluating, and visiting new recruits.
The class is only half-full with 6 weeks to go, he's not going to fill it with 4 and 5* guys in that short amount of time. Build up some depth in the weaker positions and stay on top of the elite players who've been keen on Tennessee for a while is the plan.
In the mean, though, chill out, and let the staff do their thing.

A +1 to you Carolina and to the OP. Way too early to be too worried and Coach Jones has some really good recruiters on his staff. True, they have some obstacles to overcome, but with the new intensity around the program, I have confidence the climb back to relevance in the SEC has already started. Who knows at this stage, we may be in for Dooley Part II, or on the other hand, we may have found our Saban!
"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!
How the heck did my comment upset someone so much it deserved a down vote. Sometimes this board baffles me.
Got you a +1 to help offset Puddin. I think some of our friends misunderstand the purpose of the down-vote. Or maybe I am the one who misunderstands - I reserve mine for trolls or personal attacks and don't use one just because I may disagree with the poster.
You mean two weeks in, coming off of three straight losing seasons, you expected a stream of 5 star recruit commitments? No matter who we hired (Gruden included), you were not going to see that - particularly with Cheeks academic requirements that many of our SEC rivals do not have. Is a little early for the sky is falling thing.

Back at ya.
Agree 100% with this. +1
Staff turn over scares most recruits. We are second and third choice for kids. They develope relationships with our staff and before you know it the staff is gone. We've had so many HCs, coordinators, schemes etc over the past 5 years its hard to be taken seriously. Well get kids who have us as their third choice who don't get picked by higher priorities.

Time will tell. It does bother me some too though. All the excuses above are what we said about Dooley for 3 years.
Maybe we'll get a few late Christmas presents. That will ease our minds.
gasp a DV?? whatever shall i do? Give me some more but u know it's true.

Butch Jones can 100% be judged on how he finishes this year in recruiting. He has plenty of time to build some relationships and this year might be an easier sell than next year if we struggle. The fact that he doesn't have the name/personal brand to immediately lure top recruits isn't a surprise.
That said, I think he will finish well. But we shouldn't blame Cheek, timing, Dooley, or anyone else if we don't close well on recruits that are considering us.
I guess I kinda did, but I think you know what I meant... He has not had time to repair all the torn relationships. Plus we haven't had a bunch of winning seasons to get the big time guys to notice us. We will get there, but it will take some time.
