Only advise I can offer is make sure the place you take it at is bonafide. I have seen a few of these places that has students throwing a 35 lb weight between each other and they both are standing on bosu balls. This looks to me as a great way to get injured, really fast.

Use caution and have a blast.

  • I decided back last summer I was going to try to exercise- I went out for a walk one morning and had a salad for lunch. My wife accused me of having an affair. True story!

Benji, I've done Crossfit. I took the introductory class, which lasts about a month, at a place in Memphis. I loved it! It's hard as hell, but you'll notice your strength and stamina increasing quickly if you stick with it. The only advice I'd give about it is stick with it and don't sacrifice good form for speed. A lot of the workouts are determined by time and how many reps you can do, but make sure you're always concentrating on good form. You'll increase your reps as you keep going to workout, but if you dwell on getting more reps while sacrificing good form, I can guarantee you're gonna hurt yourself in some form or fashion, and then all those reps will be for naught as you have to sit out going forward. The great thing about Crossfit is the community and how you make friends who end up being one of the biggest motivating factors.

However, I'm no longer going to a Crossfit gym because the price of most of the gyms in the area are just too high for me to justify. I still workout everyday, but I get the Crossfit workouts online and do the exercises at my regular gym with the same time/rep requirements.

I'd still endorse for anyone to give Crossfit a try, but I will say the two biggest detractors from it were, one, the price, and two, most of the people who work at a Crossfit gym will push you towards the Paleo diet, which is a very low-carb/organic diet which I found difficult to stick with and pay for, but if you can, then you'll see results fast.

Good luck to you with this! Just try to not be the guy that passes out/throws up in the first class! There more than likely will be at least one.weights = pukeface

Thanks for the encouraging words!! I know every class has that guy and sometimes it is me because I push myself that hard and far!! the prices are pretty high I will admit that so I will see if I can afford it! I can right now anyways soo thats good! The diet thing will be the hardest part for me! I love to eat good food and cant help it haha but Imma do my best! I love lifting just havent been able to get to a place I was comfortable doing it in a couple years!

  • Crossfit changed my life. I have a desk job and had ballooned up to 245 lbs at a little over 6 feet tall. I started crossfit and a running program and am down to 185 lbs and did a half marathon last fall. I sleep better, work better, play better with my son and am genuinely happier. Stick to the paleo diet as much as possible. It'll make a huge difference. I don't follow it like the bible but do what I can. Both the crossfit and running communities are extremely encouraging and I'd be happy to give you any advice I could. Good luck and stick with it.

  • Also most crossfit workouts can be done at a normal lower cost health club. You may have to modify some but it'll save you a fortune and you'll still see results.

Ok I've been crossfiting for a while now....and I've drank the kool-aid. Simply it works look at my photo! That said be smart I DO NOT recommend going for RX for at least 6 months that's a quick way to get injured don't feel bad about putting less weight on focus on the movements especially with the OLY lifts. Slow down focus on what your doing Keep good FORM. ASK lots of questions thats why the trainers are there. My last advice is nutrition nutrition nutrition gotta keep your glucose stores up and lots of protein every morning I start off with a fresh fruit protein shake that gives me about 60 grams right off the bat rule of thumb is 70 percent of diet should be carbs and also 1 gram of protein to 1 lb of body weight your muscles need it. And after you do a WOD or a signature WOD feel free to PM me about it or with any questions you might have. you'll be happy your doing it but take it slow with the weights go balls to wall with the calisthenics it will Kick your A$$! But you'll grow to love it full fledged total body fitness! Good luck bro

  • Ok, I just want to put in two cents here. I'm an orthopedic PA with a background in surgery. I've been doing this 7 years.

I would never, ever, ever advise a client to do crossfit. When you watch the competitions on TV...and that is the elite of the elite of crossfit athletes...you can see them doing many of the reps incorrectly, especially as they fatigue, and that adds incredible amounts of stress to joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Because this is a relatively "new" workout fad, we don't have a lot of information on people 10-20 years out. I expect there will be an enormous amount of arthritis and joint breakdown with these people. The human is NOT meant to "lift heavy and fast" repetitiously, no matter what the founders of crossfit will tell you. The 10 from the train agrees with me. She's got a BS and PhD in exercise physiology. I realize there are plenty of times where things are "out in front" of medicine and some ways down the road, the "mainstream" accepts them as beneficial, but we know the things that cause arthritis. Intense joint stress and repetitive actions are two of them.

I would say the diet is beneficial...any diet that rids itself of processed foods and an excess of sugar would be. So I think you'd see similar results doing a "regular" workout if you also changed your diet that drastically.

I understand crockett. I am still going to try it and see how it makes me feel, change the way I am eating and all that stuff! if I start to feel problems with my body I am going to stop as soon as I do! (which usually means to late anyways) but I will keep what you said in mind.

If you're going to do it, the best advice is just watch fatigue. Once you start to feel ANY fatigue...stop. Crossfit does not encourage this though...so good luck fighting through the "cult/peer pressure" mentality.

  • I have been doing Crossfit for months now and am in better shape than when I played college football. I'm actually competing in a competition tomorrow. Like was started above, get all of your movements down before trying anything close to Rx until your coach said you can. And Crockett, I'm a trained physician assistant too, and both of my coaches are chiropractors. When someone looks like their form is failing, they are cutoff. There are fewer injuries in CF than at a regular gym.

Benji, enjoy and take your time learning the movements. You will be kipping in no time!

I patently disagree with the "cut off". I have gone and observed at a few crossfit gyms in the Denver area. Maybe they do at your gym...but not out here. They are encouraged to "finish and finish fast".
