    To the University of Tennessee student body,
    Let me start with one of my favorite sayings, it's something I tell our players all the time:
    It's a great day to be alive!!!
    Well I want to personally ask for your help in making Friday night a great night to be a Tennessee Vol!
    We open our regular season against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m., and I want you to pack the student section and show what makes Thompson-Boling Arena the nation's No. 1 college basketball arena.
    Throughout the past year, I've had a chance to meet a lot of you during my walks on campus, before and after our games and during lunches at the UC and Presidential Court. I've even talked to some of you on Twitter (keep it coming).
    I consider the student body an extension of our team, so as a member of the team, I expect you to be at practice this Thursday at Thompson-Boling Arena at 3:30 p.m. If you're late, there's a good chance Nicodemus is going to make you wear one of our weight vests and run the arena steps.
    We'll have pizza for you, and you'll also be able to sign up to join the Rocky Top Rowdies, which is my favorite section of the arena on Tennessee game days. The energy generated by the Rocky Top Rowdies truly makes a difference in close games. Our players feed off of that every night.
    Our practices can get pretty intense at times, which is how I like it. Hopefully I'll see you there on Thursday and you can help add to the intensity and get our guys ready for Friday night.
    I'm honored and humbled to be your coach, and I guarantee that I'll work hard every day to make you proud of the effort your basketball team plays with for as long as I'm on that home bench.

  • That's awesome. Glad to have him as our coach. I'll be there. Bought 15 cheapies on StubHub for $1 each. No reason people coming in for the football game shouldn't be able to make basketball a sellout.

    Can you imagine if we had someone with this kind of passion and spirit as our football coach?!

  • Man Coach Martin really gets it. When I got this email I got pumped up even more than I already was for BasketVol season. I wish we had a coach in the football program that got it like this guy does.

    Well I didn't want to come out and say it but I completely agree. Dooley has never embraced the students and fans like Cuonzo and Pearl.

  • It's all in the way in which he conducts himself, the way he treats his players, and the regard he seems to have for everyone else he encounters. I've never actually met the man and obviously don't play for him, but I know I'm actually working a little bit harder on my homework right now than I was before I read that email. Something about him just makes you want to be better than you ever have been.

    Basically I'm fixing to make a STATEment with this Home Depot Supply Chain case analysis. biggrin

  • If I were a UT student, you would have to chain me up for me not to be there Thursday or Friday. This is total class by Coach Martin. Truly excited to have him at the helm of the BasketVols. GO VOLS!

  • I am not a student at UT, but how could you not be excited about this coach and the team. Such a different atmosphere between basketball and football. Over the past 6 years we have been able to take down highly ranked teams and show how much passion we have as a fan base. I love that CBP brought it that to TBA, but I believe CCM is going to take us to a different level. Wished I could say that about Dooley.

    I'm not sure what you mean. I'm coming in for the basketball game and looking forward the an NCAAT season.

    Serious question for you current students: Has Coach Dooley ever sent you guys emails or had rallies trying to get you guys more involved or fired-up and ready to come to the football games?

    not in the slightest. There was a pep rally for the LSU game last year, but that wasn't Dooley's idea. It was just the university

  • It's hard to imagine a coach as personable with the students as Cuonzo. About once a week he eats with students and just talks to them. He is alright at replying on twitter, and he seems to genuinely care for every student, athlete or no. Cuonzo is without a doubt my favorite coach

    I agree. As much as most of us blame Hamilton with everything that went wrong with all the sports teams at Tennessee the last few years, I think we owe him a big thank you for getting Coach Martin for us.

    So THANK YOU Mike Hamilton, job well done in hiring Coach Martin. clap
