Cutcliffe

  • Maybe I'm in the minority, but I just dont see the allure of hiring this guy. I know he's been here before and had some success. I know he had success at Ole Miss, and I know he's having success at duke this year (who controls their own destiny in their division...YIKES). But I just dont think he's a coach that will come in and get us back.

First, hes an "offensive" coach. Offense isnt our issue this year. I know as a HC you aren't one or the other, but I would feel better with a defensive minded coach.

Second, while he's had some success, look at the circumstances. While he was at Ole Miss the west was not the dominate division that it is now (went 25-23 in SEC play), and his success this year at duke is being accomplished in the ACC. Sure it's duke...but come on. Plus, the "success" is a 6-4 season so far this year and an overall record of 21-37 and 9-29 in the ACC. That does not inspire great confidence in me.

Third, the guy is almost 60. Could he recruit the way tennessee needs to and is accustomed to?

Lastly, i read on ESPN that he has said he probably wouldnt leave Duke because they've been loyal to him when he hasn't been winning, so he's not just going to up and leave and hang them out to dry.

I dunno, bottom line is I just don't see Cutcliffe as being a great hire right now. Maybe if he would have taken the job before dooley, but in our current situation I just dont think it would serve us well.

  • I like Cut. He's a winner and knows how to develop QBs and run an offense. While defense is the concern now, it won't always be that way, so over prioritize defense at your own risk. Cut plus a strong DC would go a long way to restoring the performance that everyone wants. That said, I don't think he leaves Duke. Likes it there and has major job security with 6-win seasons and wants to be loyal to them.

His overall body of recruiting work isn't very inspiring though. I think Cut was a very good OC/assistant coach, but I don't think he will ever perform at a high level as a HC, and if other "big time" programs thought he could, he wouldn't be coaching at Duke right now. We need a coach who,IMO, could come in a get some of the top recruits attention immediately, and Cut isn't going to "WOW" a lot of recruits in today's world.

I think people underestimate what he did at Ole Miss. I guess my thought is that we could do a whole lot worse. But TN would have to swing and miss on several people for Cut even to be considered.

I agree. Cut is a sentimental pick, but we have to move forward. The past is gone.

Ole Miss was crazy as hell to fire Cut. He would have gotten them into the conversation, IMO, had they just shown a little patience.

I really believe Cut was hired at Ole Miss just to get Eli, they couldn't stand the thought of losing another Manning to UT, but Cut lasted one more season after Eli left, only to be let go. Could we do worse than Cut, absolutely, but I really feel he's where he needs to be as a HC, somewhere that expectations are tempered somewhat, and that's not UT....lol

  • If Cutcliffe is hired I think it'll be a sort of last stop for him and would basically just continue what Dooley has started. I don't see him as a championship coach, but I do think he would pull off more wins than Dooley and his staff.
