DC candidate coming to Knoxville?

  • Does this mean that Randy Shannon is completely out of the picture? If so, what happened to eliminate him from consideration?

It appears that Randy Shannon was never in the picture. Wes and others reported from the very beginning that they did not feel that RS was ever a true candidate for the job. Internet rumors and a few Miami area talk show hosts seemed to only fuel the fire. Dooley had a plan from day 1 and over the next three days you are about to see it play out...

I disagree. There was too much going on for him to have not been somewhat in the picture. UT never confirmed anything, but there was smoke everywhere, which, in the news business, generally indicates at least a few glowing embers.

Not to be argumentative, because I honestly have no clue if Shannon was contacted or not, but no sources with any type of Tennessee connections reported that Shannon had been contacted by UT. Everything come from Feels like 98 website and one particular poster on TOS that has connections to South Florida HS football. My personal opinion is that this all was created by Shannon's agent, just as it was with Arkansas and Auburn. Auburn knew who they wanted from Day 1 and waited until Van Gorder's team got knocked out of playoffs. Shannon was never in consideration there, yet there were rumors everywhere that he was choosing Auburn over Tennessee. There seems to be smoke around Shannon though - smoke of the NCAA kind which is why I personally believe that no team, including Tennessee, is been willing to offer him a position. Just my two cents....

welcome to the show, mlm! And +1 for ya.

It's kinda quiet in here this morning - I'm thinking it must be the calm before the storm...

Welcome MLM and AWBO it is quiet. Emotionally drained after the Sunseri firestorm. Gonna' be interesting tonight with the interview taking place today and the possibility of info and speculation to follow. Must rest these old bones in anticipation.

Based on this timeline I think Sunseri has been at the top or near the top of Dooley's list from the beginning. Otherwise he could have gotten this done quicker. I would imagine he has talked to several other candidates to ensure his due diligence but the fact that he hasn't hired anyone else tells me that Sunseri is they guy he has wanted to talk to from the start. Given the Dooley-Hart connection with Saban and the fact that Dooley knows Sunseri, this make perfect sense.

Tennessee can get this deal done - I don't think Sunseri would come to Knoxville unless he is interested in the job and has the framework of a deal in mind - now let's see if Dooley and Hart can close the deal.

One other thing to keep in mind that works in our favor - Sunseri is 53. If he wants to someday be a head coach then he needs to move to the next level and have success there. Otherwise, the window of opportunity for 60 year old first-time head coaches is very small. We are offering him a chance to run his own defense where college football is played at the highest level. If he has success here then he'll be a hot head coaching candidate. Both he and his agent know that.

Not sure about that, but thanks! I am just ready to get my life back - I have let this DC search consume me over the last 10 days. We need to get someone hired before I am looking for a job myself....

Nice line of reasoning. Let us now pray it is prophetic in the sense of a done deal. +1

Look at the sources of most of the smoke though. Not 247, but sites like feelslike98. They confirmed that he was hired and a done deal over a week ago, so just because it's reported in today's media climate doesn't make it true. Very few media outlets you can trust anymore. Thankfully, this is one!

  • Hi Wes, do you think Lance Thompson will think about leaving because they are bringing in someone who has similar creds., and he gets no shot? I've read rumors on message boards that he is pretty upset.

  • I'm with Ryan on this one, I think it would be a great hire but don't count your chickens before they hatch. Being this is the first concrete info on any DC hire this late in the game. I would think this is the guy and on top of that why do you go interview for a job your not interested in? Who knows, there all friends and Sunseri may be coming to knoxville to have lunch with Dooley & Hart to talk bout old times.
