Great questions Wes. It's revealing to me the phrasing he uses when he wants to be circumspect. For instance, when he said that Chancellor Cheek agreed to the 'validity of SOME of the concerns' he had expressed, he was using what I call a weasel word to squirm around and sidestep a sensitive issue. Much like a weasel squirms around to get into the hen house. In this case that, in my mind, is a good thing because it means he's doing it to get into Cheeks hen house a little at a time. Smart guy. The other thing that caught my eye was when he said 'people didn't know'...really. That is as mind blowing a statement about and indictment of the AD's office as I can imagine. What was Mike Hamilton thinking? Where were the businessmen boosters? Where was the financial accountability as it pertains to the future health of the Athletic Department. I can't wait for the balance of this interview. This is unreal unless I am misunderstanding what I have read. Thanks +1

  • Putting all the PC stuff aside, Hamilton wrecked our athletics program!

  • Great article Wes. Maybe to good, it caused me to miss Sunday School. My wife got mad at me and now we're not going at all. It's okay because I told her it was all your fault and she said cool let's grill out instead. So now I have a fully stocked ice cold cooler and hot coals on the grill. Looks like I'll be to busy to read anymore on here until later today. Just another day in my life.biggrin

Good grief! Tnbear nailed it. The statement that no one knew the state of the athletic department is a huge red flag or a BS flag. Here's my position:
    1. Everyone tracks money. Accounting is the life blood of a business. No way anyone will convince me that "no one knew". What was reported at the quarterly briefings? What was reported on a monthly basis?
    2. The person or persons involved with the money problem are incompetent or intentionally misdirected funds to weaken the athletics department. I suspect a little of both.
    3. It really sucks to know that some people got paid a lot of money to totally screw up the athletics department, mainly football.
    Damn!

  • Wes, this (part 1 & 2) is a great interview. I am anxiously waiting for the conclusion.

  • Are they bringing back majors such as Urban Studies and Law Enforcement to give tweener students?

Do Hart and cheeck really expect us to believe that the faculty was really surprised to hear about these issues? Really???

Do we still pay the university for tuition? And do we - as I have heard - pay out-of-state tuition for athletes from out-of-state - still?

I'm telling you people, don't be fooled. At best, Hart - and maybe, just maybe Booger Cheek - have only put a band-aid on the situation. the only hope we have of a successful outcome is if the the local media really digs into these issues and publishes them.

I have precious little hope for that because I am currently reporting more on these issues than the local media.

  • With regards to some of Hart's "political" answers, we must remember that the toes one steps on today may be connected to the butt he has to kiss tomorrow. Hart isn't stupid.

An alternative perspective, referencing the following line from DH:

"I think a lot of the things, as we went through our assessment, a lot of the things that I identified, people on campus didn’t know about them. I was never misled. Not ever. Not by anybody. People didn’t know about the reality of our fiscal situation. People didn’t know the reality about competitive disadvantages that we identified as being such. People didn’t know."

Could it be that several people on campus knew what the isolated situation was at UT, and was perfectly content with UT running the Athletic Dept at a net-zero basis - no accumulated reserves, in other words. However, having $2M in reserves doesn't sound too bad unless compared with our rivals, who have (as DH has pointed out) $50-100M in reserves. Now $2M looks ridiculous.

I cling to the hope that there was no intentional act to screw up athletics, instead resulting in a blind adherence to a standard that was (is) woefully out of sync with the rest of the SEC in recent years. Hopefully, DH has been able to present this more accurate picture of reality to the powers that be, and equally hopefully, maybe the powers that be will be more cooperative.
