The conspiracy theorist in me has noticed a little trend with our top targets.... Bellamy wants a media free day today, Ford tweets "media: don't call or text", North and pops have gone into isolation, Morris isn't sayin' anything, and Green has been off the reservation for the past several days. Orchestrated?

Even if this staff doesn't see the results in terms of 2013 signees, this will generate a lot of positive momentum heading into the 2014 recruiting season, and the rest of the SEC might want to take notice. (and while we're at it, can we drop a giant anchor in the middle of Vandy's field and tell them to move it themselves?_

man, i hate to say these things, but you dont get "credit" for NOT getting kids...This isnt horseshoes where "close" counts... The coaches are paid for results, not getting close. Heck, if getting "close" were the standard, Dooley would still have a job here. Not trying to be uncivil with you tntoak, and i know we are all pulling on the same rope in the same direction.., but i cant agree with you on that. A weak finish and a poor recruiting class does not get masked by the fact that our staff "tried really really hard.." - It would hurt us and probably substantially. We really need some of these elite kids, not just because it gives us a higher recruiting ranking, but because guys like Lawson and Green and Bell etc.. are needed to help us win games! And by winning games, we can build momentum for next year's class, and finally get back to competing for championships..!

I get what you are saying, but you also have to give some slack to a coaching staff that hasn't had the time to create these relationships like the people they are going up against in most cases. Getting this close on some of these guys is impressive. Getting them on campus for OVs is even more impressive. It will be a bit of a let down if they don't close strong, but I am not willing to hols that against them.
The D will be a year older and going back to a 4-3, so we should see improvement on that end. The offensive line will take a lot of pressure off the new skill position players that will be taking a larger role. I think we can have a solid year if we finish OK on this recruiting class. Yes, it would possibly set us back a year, but that is to be expected with a new hire.
I am not saying that they deserve a raise for getting close, but you have to look at what they are doing as a positive. Now, if that becomes a trend, then we have an issue.

It's not a matter of "holding it against them" if we dont close with a strong class...it's not about ME at all..it's just plain objective truth. This is a results oriented business and every coach in the SEC knows and understands that. The pay is great, but with it comes a bucket load of pressure, horribly oppressive work hours, and impossible expectations. As Alec Baldwin's character said in Glengary Glenross, "first prize is a cadillac, anyone want to know what second prize is? Second prize is a set of steak knives..Third prize, you're FIRED!" That's the SEC.
So it doesnt matter if i hold a weak recruiting class against CBJ, the rest of the SEC will...we must get good recruits to win, and we must get them NOW... That's not a knock on CBJ, it's a statement about every coach in the SEC. So we can lament the position he has been put in, the limited time he has etc.., but none of that matters if we dont get good players and we dont win.
I really like what i am reading about our chances with some big name elite guys..so lets hope, for all our sakes, we close out strong so we can put an improved team on the field next year and turn this thing around!

The point I was actually making (which you completely ignored) is that the work this staff is putting into the 2013 class will reap even greater dividends for 2014 and beyond, REGARDLESS of the final makeup of this class. And yes, this staff deserves credit for getting in the conversation with some of these recruits who hadn't even glanced in Tennessee's direction while Dooley was running the show.
You are looking for instant gratification, which simply isn't a feasible option in the ultra-competitive SEC. The only way that could have even been a remote possibility would have been if Tennessee had pulled Nick Saban from Alabama to be the HC.

Here's my thing, you dont win games with players you "almost" got. And nowhere in my post did i say i "expected" the new staff to pull in a top 5 class. It's not about ME or MY expectations. Nobody gives a rats behind about MY expectations. The bottom line is this - CBJ will be judged on wins and losses, no different than anyone else. And wins and losses, by and large, especially in the SEC, are determined by the quality of players you have on the field. So, either we get elite players to compete with the elite teams or we dont. We might have great excuses about why we didnt get a great class, but in the end, it doesnt matter what the excuses are..we either have players to compete or we dont. So we can all congratulate each other and the staff on what a great job they did on "almost" getting a lot of these elite players, but come saturdays in the fall, none of that is going to help us. What will help us are good and great players. The more the better. Which is why, unfair or not, we need to close strong and get some of these guys who can help us on the field in the fall. That's my only point.
As to your suggestion that the efforts of this staff THIS year on this year's class will pay dividends for next year's class, it's not really a point i can concur with or dispute. Im of a mind to believe that what happens on the field on saturdays will have a lot more to do with CBJ's recruiting success than anything else, but i hope you are right. Im just not ready to congratulate the staff on results that we havent reaped yet. At this point, time will tell, i suppose. What i dont think is in dispute, however, is that this year's class still remains a critical part of the future success that CBJ might have. Close strong this year and i will be at the front of the line to congratulate this staff on a job well done.
