Dead Period is a Bad Time for Tennessee...

  • I should've posted this when the Dead period started not when it concluded, but we seemed to have some recruiting momentum so I didn't...

The weeks leading up to the dead period good teams are practicing therefore they more then likely don't have 6 coaches on the road. We made up ground in that time, and really made a mark until the dead period came.

During the Dead period Good teams are playing in bowl games getting good exposure and there is nothing we can do about it. Also since Dooley couldn't recruit even 1 player that made the Army Game or Under Armour game, we are getting recruited against there to.

I saw this coming and I am not freaking out quite yet. It looks dim right now. We aren't going to have anybody announce for us at either All-Star game, and there is a very realistic chance we miss out on all 4 of North, Green, Bell, and Lawson.

But I do believe Jones surrounded himself with good recruiters, better than Dooley's staff was. When the All-star games are over and the National Champ game is over it's a new season. We have a lot of official visit weekends and will do well to get great talent here. Thigpen, Azzanini, Martinez, and Graham will do work.

Jones believes Tennessee is the best job in the country, and I think he truly feels that way. His energy and passion will help us close well... And like Volfan28, if we go 0 for 4 on the before mentioned names, I will also jump off the ledge. J/K... Be patient, Go Vols

  • I agree that not having any commits in the all-star games is hurting us, but the win-loss record of the past three years is responsible for a large part of that. That also is a direct reflection on Dooley. I just hope that some of these guys will give our new staff a chance to earn their commitment before they jump onboard with others. I'm not a big fan of this dead period stuff... It seems to work in the favor of teams in bowl games, or teams that have several commits in the all-star games. I might change my mind though when we are one of those teams again... biggrin

  • Sadly, at this point I don't see us heading for a top 25 class. If we stay in the 40's then I won't lie to you, I won't be happy. And I especially won't be happy if I see Auburn and Arkansas significantly improve their ranking while we don't. Don't mean to drizzle on the parade here, but that's how I feel. I don't expect miracles but I do expect results. We have too much ground to make up as it is.

Not driz, but I would be very happy to see Chip Kelly take that job. Would make our trip to Eugene next year a bit more palatable.

    Well stated.

In terms of exposure, we have a couple of things going for us.
1). Large number of Vols making the Pro Bowl
2). Upcoming draft coverage will showcase alot of the TN brand with Bray, Hunter, and Patterson sure to be featured as high draft selections. Throw in Da'Rick as well as I bet they will show more of his highlights as a Vol vs TN Tech.
3). New staff's embracement of social media to heavily market #1 and #2.

I may be reachng a bit but feel we have a couple of things keeping us relevant during this time.

Haven't looked it up lately...where do we stand vs AU & Arky in the recruiting ranks? Agree w/your point...won't be a good sign if we fall behind those two, although would not be surprised. Bottom line is that the TN brand has been tarnished more/longer and will probably take more time to repair. As we all know, WINS will make the ultimate difference, but you've got get the recruits...so go figure.

  • Auburn is 21, we are 38 and Arkansas is 45. My expectation is the low 30's. If we sneak into the 20's then we should be very happy with that finish provided we meet areas of need.

Not to take up for Dooley, but Pig Howard played in one of those games, I think the UA game....

I was only talking about this year. Dooley has had commits in these games before.
