Defense Stats ....

  • Seems like all fan conversation centers on our offense and Tyler, rather than our D. Facts say D is the concern and I totally agree. 1st year in 3 - 4. Slow at LB , DB and Safety. Not enough pressure from D line. So, whatcha think?

  • Nothing shocking here IMO. over the coarse of the season id expect the #s to improve a little bit, a lot of teams have yet to get into conference games so stats are still goin to be mildly inflated. But overall, totally expected the D to be in the bottom half of the conference. Next year i could see a huge improvement bc we return...what like 9 starters?

  • In very simplistic terms, we're not going to outscore many SEC teams. Love Sal, but we don't have a SEC D yet. Looking at games without big plays is not looking, because that is what we're consistently giving up....big plays. Looking for a positive, I think we are tackling better than in past couple of years. I assume the coaches are giving as much attention to D as O, but fans are totally focusing on O and Bray. We can win one or two unexpected games with our O as is, but we cannot surprise quality SEC teams with our current D. And damn I hope I am totally off-base here. I want someone to throw this in my face over the next few weeks and say I was totally wrong.

  • Because of our style of play, looking at totals is probably a little misleading because we play more snaps. If you look at averages, the picture is a lot different.

    Positives
    - 17th in 3rd down defense (3rd in SEC)
    - 17th in passing efficiency defense
    - Redzone D - 5 TD's in 12 attempts

    Disappointments
    - 81st in TFL
    - 94th in sacks

    We do a real good job on third down, pretty good job against the pass considering the amount of passes against us, and keep teams out of the endzone more than 50% of the time in the redzone, but we are not nearly as disruptive as we wanted to be. My point about giving up big plays is not that they shouldn't count, but one hopes that as the team continues the transition to a 3-4, those errors will stop. So in my opinion, I expect the D to get better throughout the year whereas the offense sort of is what it is.

    Also, +1 because I think you are making a fair argument. But while our offense is clearly better than the D, I think they are almost an equal liability against good teams.

    - We tend to turn the ball over when Bray is pressured.
    - We can't run the ball against good teams.
    - We can't convert in short yardage.
    - We have not handled adversity well (Forcing it deep, giving up on the run, etc...)

  • Didn't happen in the Fla game but expect this d to get some crucial turnovers down the stretch. You can drive 70 yds and throw a pick but no points on the board and that's what counts. Were close to having the same amount of turnovers as we did in 12 games last season. I'll give up some yards and take the Turnovers.

  • Wow. You know it is a tough league when you average 172 yes rushing per game and are freaking eighth in our conference. Amazing.

  • One stat that I did not see and am too lazy to go find is our average time of possession on offense. I think it relates to the D's performance but does not account for the big breakdowns.

    Also the no huddle switch in a year where we have little depth on D has to be looked at.....clearly it already shows up in ToP.
