Defense hopes to be bold, balanced

UT's new defensive coaching staff tries to avoid specifics when discussing the new scheme — why spoil the rare, genuine element of surprise? — but some things have emerged.

  • Good read. Thanks Wes. We will definitely learn more when we watch them against NC State and Fla.

Great info. +1. It hasn't always been good around this team for several years but it has not been dull...that's not going to change. Let's hope it is a good 'not dull' with this years team.

  • Great Stuff, Wes! I know that time will tell, but what's your take on what we'll line up in the base defense vs. NC State? Please don't say "multiple". That makes no sense to me. Will we be primarily 3-4? (which is what I'm thinkin') Or will it be primarily 4-3? (which I doubt)

    Thanks for the great piece!

It will be primarily 3-4, but Tennessee's coaches have gone out of their way to point out that it's multiple for a reason. There will be plenty of different looks. Remember, with as much as teams play nickel and dime packages these days because of all the spread offenses, a base defense isn't necessarily the one a team plays the majority of the time. Some teams play nickel more than their base packages now.

Sorry for the Typo on the Sam spot...supposed to be opposite of the Jack..I know.

On the NC State game... Im hesitant to agree or say that it will be a 3-4... just because of what NC ST does. Then again who knows maybe our Sam and Jack will be that fast and able to cover RB's out of the backfield ???

That's just my simple honest opinion. NCST has their scrimage this saturday as well and barring weather, I hope to go out and see it... not that will tell anything, but ... I will get to see how their replacement WR's look and how their 3 pronged attack of RB's look.

Glennon the QB, REALLLLLLLLY likes checking down and throwing to the RB's... so that's why I said what I did about the 3-4....and the Who knows comment. Because maybe for that game you DO play or use a multiple... I could see using maybe a smaller quicker LB on the outside... to better cover the RB... or maybe you use a nickel with Tino Thomas or Brent Brewer or another Big-ish Saftey that can play LB hybrd type of role on run support or those short passing routes...

I hate the multiple description too... but it is what it is.

We should be better in some of those positions, so there might be a better description / field version of it this year!!!!!

  • Oh and another thing... NCST's LB's are struggling right now... to be expected I suppose...replacing all three with very little experience. Their safties are telling them what to do and where to be etc. So... that will be another thing to watch... just how much those three get "caught up" in the line etc... I suspect their RB's will look good on saturday!
