Derrick Green was a silent commitment to Dooley and Graham

I read the article that you refer to. In truth, several guys who ultimately didn't sign with UT supposedly told coaches they were coming. In case you haven't been paying attention for the past 100 years or so, this happens every year. It means nothing. Every year those with level heads tell people not to get too excited until a kid actually signs. Call me crazy but I'm guessing it will happen next year also.

Exactly.... and many times, especially in the 90's and early 2000's, we were that school that got players to flip when they had committed elsewhere. I think we get back to that (North and Dobbs just tip of the iceberg). As far as next year, I think we get a stud class, maybe even rivaling what Ole Miss did this year. We have this potential "Legacy Class" going for us, and if we can convince them to want to be a part of something big, 2014 could be a special recruiting class!

  • He would have been a VOL if CDD could coach at all. It was hard to stomach watching them at times. Do you blame a recruit for changing their mind????

I don't know if this is true or not but operating under the assumption that it is, I think we can clearly see two points:

    1. People will go to great lengths to disparage Derek Dooley's recruiting abilities and efforts. 2. It's way too early to start voicing any questions/concerns you may have about Butch Jones and Co.'s recruiting abilities. You'll be eaten alive.

True statements both. Not really sure what Dooley did to engender such disdain, say what you want about him, he was not a bad recruiter. Every one of his classes was better than the class we just signed. His three classes were ranked 9, 13 and 17 by Rivals..

Yeah in that order, he got worse each year. Tennessee became a less desirable destination, for players and coaches. I thank DD for helping us get the new facilities but that's about it. All the talent in the world means nothing if you can't win with it. I am happy to have a coach that can both recruit and coach football. You should listen to high school coaches talk about Dooley, it's no wonder we missed on some guys. To the OP, you just can't stop lobbying for Dooley can you? His record speaks for itself, do you think that if we had Green we would be a NC contender with Dooley coaching? No, we would not be, so let the few recruits we missed out on go and focus on having a coach who knows how to win, develop players, and recruit. Some of you put way too much focus on recruiting, look at FSU and USC and you will see that recruiting alone does not make you a good team.

You are correct..recruiting ALONE, does not make you a good team..but i think it's also fair to say, certainly in the SEC, that you cant be a good team without consistent excellence in recruiting.. Recruiting is a necessary, but sometimes not a sufficient, condition for excellence on the field.

Not disagreeing with that, nor do I want to defend Kiffin, but Fulmer did win so it was a little different. Saban isn't considered the most likeable guy but does it matter?

Very well said +1. No I agree with that but I think that it's important to judge CBJ on the body of his work, not this one class. Butch doesn't need a ten win season, he just needs to win a game or two in the next two seasons he wasn't supposed to. After that he should be recruiting very well and coaching well which is a recipe for success.

Far too many people aren't secure enough to be able to acknowledge anything positive about Dooley for fear that it might lessen their opinion of Butch somehow.

You have a point but far too many things have come out recently that make you question Dooley and staff's dilligence while recruiting. I'm told (didn't see it but heard Doug Matthews say he saw it) that Dooley admitted while serving on ESPN as a recruiting analyst that he had actually never seen Vonn Bell play. Numbers of nearby coaches have said they had no contact with UT staff. Several said they never received tout request sheets which recruiters routinely send to HS coaches asking for potential recruits. I know when you leave the naysayers come out of the woodwork, and Dooley did have a wholesale turnover in staff last year, but it doesn't look like his staff was out beating the bushes the way you have to do to compete in the SEC. Will Jones do better? I think he will. I think his staff has a work ethic. Dooley? My one contact with him at an alumni function, he blew me off like I was nobody. No other UT coach I have ever met, Dickey, Majors, Fulmer, Kiffin, and numerous assistants have ever treated me like that. If he was that way with others, including recruits parents and coaches, and there is evidence that he was.............aloof, is a kind way to put it, then I'm not surprised at his lack of success on the recruiting trail.

Kiffin, I'll not defend. Fulmer? He definitely missed on some high profile recruits and has excuses for most of them. But I don't recall HS coaches bad mouthing him, At least not like the talk about Dooley.

Bama has long been able to pick our pockets on high profile linebackers, going back to EJ Junior. Fulmer says in a recent interview that Patrick Willis who stated he was a Vol fan as a kid and essentially begged UT to recruit him, was his biggest mistake. I'd throw Randall Cobb in there, and yes I heard the line that he wanted to play QB, but coaches have been blowing smoke in recruits ears that they'll get a chance to play a certain position for years. Heck, if Cobb was a good QB, he would have knocked out Crompton and others, but if he wanted to see the field he'd likely have played at receiver or back which he eventually did at KY. Phillip used to send O (and D for that matter) linemen to the league each year. When that production fell off, so did the wins.

No DV necessary IMO. Thanks for the info +1

Wes rightfully asks that info posted inside the "VIP Room" should stay on this board. It's only fair to the guys on TOS, that their info should be treated the same way.

  • Nothing personal to the OP, but I am not sure why this matters after the fact. What has happend is what it is. We have the class that we have, and we have to move forward and build for 14. Dwelling on the past serves no purpose except for an attempt to try and get some people upset.

Lack of success on the recruiting trail? If there was one area where Dooley had success it was in recruiting. UT had four very high draft picks who left this year's team. Next year Stone, James, Richardson, Maggit, Johnson, McCullers, and Fulton could all be drafted. Some of them could go very early. Aren't those guys all Dooley recruits? Dooley couldn't put together a winning team on gameday, but he recruited well.

Even though we're down we're still Tennessee we still have some pull to our university (tradition, sec, pro players, fan base, facilities) the one thing we were missing is Winning which Dooley tried to promise people was gonna happen till this year if Dooley would still be here this class would have been a flop IMO he's recruiting success would have run out yes he did get some good players while he was here but weve slowly been losing out on others because of him as well and with this staff and hopefully a winning season (hopeful upsets) these doors will open up and it'll show just what winning can do to a program and dooleys classes won't look as good anymore

  • Why would anyone take high school coaches opinions as gospel regarding a college coach? Coaches across this state have complained about Fulmer, Kiffin, and Dooley year in and year out. No one is saying that Dooley didnt make recruiting mistakes but lets be honest, none of this started coming out until he was on his way out the door. Then it's just a bunch of people trying to claim "I told ya so" rights. Thing are never as good as they seem (Dooley's recruiting year one) and they're never as bad as they seem (the myths that Dooley was a garbage recruiter and everyone in the media just covered it up/lied about it). The truth is always somewhere in the middle, gentlemen. If you haven't figured that out by now then I don't know what to tell you...

The first class he only had 2 1/2 weeks to affect, and the EEs were already on campus when Kiffin bailed. The second class Kiffin had started working on, and Dooley just filled in the blanks. That third class is the one where Tennessee found itself fighting off numerous other schools for recruits, and had some big last-minute defections to other schools (Santos for one). You can say that on paper the classes were better than Jones's lone UT class, but you can't deny that the quality of the classes decreased as Dooley had more and more involvement from start to finish with each class.

When Jones took over the program, the UT class was ranked in the high 30s/low 40s, depending on the service. To get this class back up to a top 25 DESPITE the recent lack of wins, DESPITE the negativity surrounding this program from media and fellow coaches alike is arguably a far better job that Dooley pulled off in his tenure. And to be honest, until we start seeing these 2013 players on the field, you really can't make any legitimate evaluation of this class.
