I read the article that you refer to. In truth, several guys who ultimately didn't sign with UT supposedly told coaches they were coming. In case you haven't been paying attention for the past 100 years or so, this happens every year. It means nothing. Every year those with level heads tell people not to get too excited until a kid actually signs. Call me crazy but I'm guessing it will happen next year also.

I don't know if this is true or not but operating under the assumption that it is, I think we can clearly see two points:
1. People will go to great lengths to disparage Derek Dooley's recruiting abilities and efforts. 2. It's way too early to start voicing any questions/concerns you may have about Butch Jones and Co.'s recruiting abilities. You'll be eaten alive.

True statements both. Not really sure what Dooley did to engender such disdain, say what you want about him, he was not a bad recruiter. Every one of his classes was better than the class we just signed. His three classes were ranked 9, 13 and 17 by Rivals..

Yeah in that order, he got worse each year. Tennessee became a less desirable destination, for players and coaches. I thank DD for helping us get the new facilities but that's about it. All the talent in the world means nothing if you can't win with it. I am happy to have a coach that can both recruit and coach football. You should listen to high school coaches talk about Dooley, it's no wonder we missed on some guys. To the OP, you just can't stop lobbying for Dooley can you? His record speaks for itself, do you think that if we had Green we would be a NC contender with Dooley coaching? No, we would not be, so let the few recruits we missed out on go and focus on having a coach who knows how to win, develop players, and recruit. Some of you put way too much focus on recruiting, look at FSU and USC and you will see that recruiting alone does not make you a good team.

You are correct..recruiting ALONE, does not make you a good team..but i think it's also fair to say, certainly in the SEC, that you cant be a good team without consistent excellence in recruiting.. Recruiting is a necessary, but sometimes not a sufficient, condition for excellence on the field.

Lack of success on the recruiting trail? If there was one area where Dooley had success it was in recruiting. UT had four very high draft picks who left this year's team. Next year Stone, James, Richardson, Maggit, Johnson, McCullers, and Fulton could all be drafted. Some of them could go very early. Aren't those guys all Dooley recruits? Dooley couldn't put together a winning team on gameday, but he recruited well.
