Detailed Breakdown of Fedora's Offense

  • This is for the portion of our fanbase who is convinced that all his offenses do is pass & that they require a mobile QB. Their QB this year is 6-3, 220 and finished with 61 carries for 99 yards. They also finished 15th nationally in total offense.

Check out this breakdown by Chris Brown, the author of SmartFootball.com.

    Scout.com: Smart Analysis: Fedora's Spread

Larry Fedora knows offense. He's coached it since his playing days back at Austin College, and he has coached in a variety of systems. But for over the last decade he's coached in what has increasingly become his own personal brand of the spread offense.

  • 61 carries for 99 yards is horrible

    hdrizzle21

  • Exactly. Yet some of our fans (who have never watched one of his teams play) will have you believe that his offense is only successful with mobile quarterbacks. QB runs are NOT a part of this offense.

Also, compare our stats for this season:

    Pass Attempts
    UT 477
    UNC 441

    Rush Attempts
    UT 413
    UNC 457

So, not only do they run the ball MORE than they pass, they also have a much better balance than our previous offense.

    VFL1263

  • He also has one of the Top 3 RB's in the country, possibly the best.

Are you deliberately missing his point 'Drizz? It says in the article that the QB is a 'threat' and is not expected to gash the defense with long runs. This allows for a QB that is not super mobile to function well in this offense. The point is that the so called Spread Offense has many variations and Fedora's is the most balanced. OcoeeRiverVol and I have been saying the same thing but not nearly as detailed as this. You're a smart guy so I would expect you to look at this with an open mind.

You don't think this offense helped make him one of the top backs? I know you want Gruden first and then Golden but this guy can coach.

Bernard ran for 1,250 yards last year without Fedora so no, stats are very similar.

  • OP's point is just that Fedora's offense doesn't rely on the QB running the ball. Rushing totals clearly illustrate that, especially when coupled with the fact that UNC was 36th in rushing this year (UT 65th). So, it wasn't that they just can't run the ball, but rather that the QB is def a passer first.

Also, UNC QB was sacked 11 times for -75 yards. Of course, that's included in the rushing totals for the QB - definitely skews them compared to a primarily running QB's totals.

I'm actually encouraged to learn this - thanks OP.

  • Fedora's offenses have always had very successful rushing attacks with his RBs.. they put up a lot of yards. The question is whether or not they could do it against SEC defenses.. To answer that, I look at how spread offenses have done in the SEC.. With a dual-threat QB (Johnny Football/Tebow/Newton), they've done pretty well. Without a dual-threat QB (Brantley, Frazier, Russell), they've struggled. The added dimension of run OR pass from the QB opens things up enough that the RBs run wild. Without the extra dimension, the spread hasn't been successful in the SEC.

I think that at a place like Tennessee, Fedora would be able to recruit the right QB for his system more times than not. There would be years where our offense just doesn't work against quality opponents, but with the right QB I think his offense would work well.

  • Here are the rankings for his offenses for the past several seasons.

    2012 UNC
    Rush 36th
    Pass 28th
    Total 15th

    2011 Southern Miss
    Rush 24th
    Pass 32nd
    Total 15th

    2010 Southern Miss
    Rush 21st
    Pass 31st
    Total 15th

    2009 Southern Miss
    Rush 26th
    Pass 43rd
    Total 32nd

    2008 Southern Miss
    Rush 21st
    Pass 38th
    Total 19th

    2007 Oklahoma State
    Rush 8th
    Pass 45th
    Total 7th

    2006 Oklahoma State
    Rush 7th
    Pass 61st
    Total 15th

So yes, having Bernard helps. But his teams have done great everywhere he has been.

UNC was 76th in rushing last year, 36th this year. Also, 53rd in total offense last year, 15th this year (5 ahead of the Vols).

Definitely different stats for the team.

  • I think this guys the real deal. However the problem is most Tennessee fans wouldn't be willing to be patient for him to bring in his players. I think he would be a great hire. But this fan base is hungry and tired of losing and we would have wait till at least year 2 before we got major success from him and his type of offense.

I'm not arguing his offense wouldn't succeed. Never said that. I just said Fedora wasn't the reason for Bernards stats, guy is a stud. Offense doesn't win in this league though, look at the teams below...

    Georgia
    Florida
    Bama

Smashmouth offenses, good defenses. It's the recipe for success in this league.

Meyer did pretty good with the spread his first two yrs with Chris Leak under center, and he was a pure pocket passer who had decent legs.

  • I don't know that I agree. UNC had immediate success. Not elite success, but 8-4 with their first winning ACC record in 11 years isn't bad. They also lost three games by a total of nine points & were competitive in every game.

I know that our schedule isn't easy next year, but I think with our OL/RBs, we can move the ball offensively. Worley/Peterman will do well in this system as well. So we could have a decent offense, and if we hire a competent coordinator, no reason we can't go 7-5/8-4. Getting Auburn at home should help us.

Texas A&M and UCLA are great examples of what a big difference coaching can make.

I know what you are thinking but we have the personnel to run his offense now. I think Bray is gone and that leaves Worley and Peterman at QB. They don't have to be Tim Tebow to succeed in Fedora's offense. We will still have a great OL, we will have very good receivers, good running backs and if we can get Green we would be set. I just think we would still be a great offense. JMO

  • I asked this question the other day about the multiple spread and got pooh poohed on. Everybody is negative about it saying it won't work in SEC. It is the new wave in college and speed to the edges and power with speed in the middle. Using a mobile QB not one that is expected to run every play. Just be mobile enough to stay out of trouble.

Very good WR's? Wouldn't call Pig Howard and Jacob Carter very good.

The key isn't the offense, it's the defense. Our most important hire is our defensive coordinator.

Georgia and Bama are third and fourth in total offense in the SEC - last year they were second and third.

Sure, it takes a great defense to win in the SEC, but given my druthers, I'd like to have a good offense to go with it. I don't think they should be considered mutually exclusive at all.

That all depends on Peterman and maybe Trubisky IMO. I think Pig and Neal would be superstars in Fedora's offense.

They have done nothing. Very good would be Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry. Good would be Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington. Average AT BEST are our returning WR's... I love Pig Howard but he's not a #1, never will be, he's to small. He's a Percy Harvin type, quick passes, swing passes, reverses. Going to be a really good player but everybody you mentioned is unproven and has shown nothing, particularly in the SEC

DRIZZLE, have you ever seen them play? No way to judge them one way or the other till they're seen on the field.
