Detailing Arkansas' pursuit of Peters

Here's a really insightful story from Robert Turbeville of Hawgs247 on how Arkansas' coaching staff managed to steal former Tennessee linebacker commitment Otha Peters in the final days leading up to National Signing Day.

I know it wasn't good news for Vols fans, but thought some of you might be interested in reading what went on behind the scenes that caused Peters to switch from UT to Arkansas.

  • Not trying to be mean to him, and I completely understand the nature of recruiting and that he is an 18 year old kid who had to make a very hard, pressured decision....

But I hope we play them in the SEC Championship and Zach Fulton knocks him out of his cleats. Just sayin...

  • “We did a great job, our staff and our players really selling him on the vision we have for our program, and he could feel it when he was here. So the hardest part was for him to tell Tennessee no. He’s a great kid, great high character kid, so that was difficult for him. But in the end, he chose what he knew was best for him in the long run.”

Sounds like they sold him on a lot of smoke and mirrors to me. Hope it works out well for him.hijack

  • After reading another article about DGB, I really don't like Petrino... good luck to Peters. I wish him the best, but Petrino is junk.

  • I doubt that's all that went on behind the scenes. I hope they never have another winning season.

Judging by the +6... you aren't alone.

  • Interesting to see the issue from the other side.

I'm not sure they ever really sold Momma Peters on the idea of AK though. Sounded to me like she let him make his own decision on that one.

Wow. This is an eye opening article about what recruitment is like for these kids. Coaches salivating all over themselves to talk to them, boosters buying drinks and making donations, giving your kid brother who has leukemia a football scholarship. LOL.

I really like his mom's comment about Lane Kiffen being like the ex-girlfriend who just wouldn't let him go.

could not agree more GoBigO....man it sounded like more than one violation going on there...also, Arky is on thin ice. I think they might have gone a little too over the top lately and nothing like a dose of the NCAA folks to take some starch out of that pig suit...

  • Nice article, but it goes back to what I have said before. Anything can look good or sound good for one day or a weekend. When a program invests 5 or 6 months into a person, they should get alittle more respect than what was displayed by this young man and Santos. Everything that glitters ain't gold. Santos will be buried on a depth chart for 2 years and Peters may play, but i believe he will have missed out on a great opportunity to grow as a man in the VFL program. I wish them well and hopefully when it counts later in life their words(ie:
I commit) will actually mean something. Go Vols!!!

No offense meant to you or Robert but I didn't see any 'insightful' information in the story. The story never really tells what made him flip that I read. Am I missing something.

Sure, the story never pinpoints one specific reason Peters flipped. But really, only he could say that, anyway. I thought it was interesting just to hear how Arkansas' coaches went about it. But, hey, if you didn't like it, you didn't like it. No problem.

Not that I didn't like it but I was hoping for insight into why he 'could feel the vision' or why he felt it was 'best for him'. The one thing that was interesting was their calling his mother and updating her. That was a smooth move on their part. Sorry if I offended because that was not my intent. Hope we're cool.biggrin since we got a little crossed up over Adam's also. Maybe I need to check my med's.
