Determined Lane provides punch

ATLANTA — After Rajion Neal bounced a few too many runs outside for his head coach’s liking, Tennessee sophomore tailback Marlin Lane knew what Derek Dooley wanted him to do.

  • if dooley or grahm told him to quit bouncing it outside and he didn't listen then heck yeah i would start lane. make neal learn a lesson then give him the chance to go out and prove he's learned
proud of lane. he was ready when his number was called

  • From what I saw Coach DD was frustrated with Neal's running. But they did let Neal score when Lane moved the ball down the field. So they still have faith in Neal - but Lane has earned more opportunities and give the Vols another weapon we need. Did not think Young played well at RB. Any thoughts?

  • I agree that Neal probably will start next week. I'd think the coaches would want to try to keep all the running backs happy, if they're going to try to wear down opponents. So I think they'd start Neal again, and come in with Lane earlier, maybe after the first time Neal dances around and does not go forward.
Speaking of wearing teams down, I LOVE it that the Vols were going fast tempo/no huddle for most of the game, because it did appear to wear down NC State, just as the defensive depth did on the other side. The no huddle also showed that Bray and the team also had the maturity and the knowledge of the playbook to run it as well.

that score was the only time i saw RayRay run it up the middle with authority, may have been others, but none that stick out. Lane absolutely Beast mode up the middle. Of course if you just want smash mouth up the middle Tom Smith may be useful....

If we do not gain 200+ rushing next week against GA State I'm going to be pissed. Well i guess i need to start digging into their personnel

  • One thing I've noticed is that we do not run the ball too good with these one back formations. In the later stages of the game I saw them line up in what looked like the strong formation from where I was sitting with an offset fullback. Once they did that I saw some improvement in the running game. I really feel like you need that fullback as an extra blocker bursting through the line to run the ball like I know they want to. I think they need to use a two back formation like that a little more. It can be done without a drop off in the passing attack. Hunter and CP on the outside, Rivera at TE, and you still have two backs to throw to as well. Or drop the TE and get Rogers out there in the slot.

  • With all the off season effort to improve the run game, I didn't understand the early 4th and 1 call for the pass as well as the 3rd and short (I think it was the 2nd quarter?) where we tried the pistol formation mis-direction (fake the toss/reverse) run play for a loss of 4. I figured we'd see the i-formation "we can get a yard if we want it" between the tackles call....not that the o' doesn't deserve a lot of credit cause they do but I was surprised by those two situations/calls

  • I have to agree that I dnt think that neal will loose his starting job just because of one game because he did out preform lane in camp but I do believe that dooley will probably have him on short leash this next game and if he dnt put it up the middle like they want then I believe lane will get the start at florida I also believe lane did peform well enough move up on the depth as number 2 or maybe co starter

  • I think something important to remember when it comes to Tennessee's coaching staff is the public depth chart is the last thing on their minds because if you've shared offensive positions with someone ever in any level of football every game can be another runningbacks play making day. So rajon may start or marlin will, either way there's no telling who will get more carries. Depth chart is mostly for media only.

  • Also, DD and the runningbacks coach will make sure marlin and rajon are fully aware of their mistakes. I mean think about the reps they will get in between the tackles this week in practice. Can anyone see the break drown of monday or tuesday's practice. inside drill will only last a majority of practice.

  • To me, it's a three man rotation in the backfield. If Lane doesn't start it doesn't matter. However, I see him being the 2 and not the three at a minimum.
