Determined Lane provides punch

that score was the only time i saw RayRay run it up the middle with authority, may have been others, but none that stick out. Lane absolutely Beast mode up the middle. Of course if you just want smash mouth up the middle Tom Smith may be useful....

If we do not gain 200+ rushing next week against GA State I'm going to be pissed. Well i guess i need to start digging into their personnel

You are correct the kid for what ever reason just wouldn't run North and South. He just has happy feet and thinks all that juking and jiving he was able to do in high school football will work at this level. Coach should sexplodeit his rear on the bench and let Lane and Tom Smith show us how to run the ball by hitting the holes the blocking scheme produces.

Don't understand why Tom Smith isn't given the chance to show his abilities. I watched him in H.S and this kid could be really good if only given the opporunity because he wasn't afraid to run the rock between the tackles.

  • I agree Lane outperformed Neal on Friday. I was so frustrated with Neal that I was yelling at the TV. I'm not ready to give up on him yet because he has all the tangibles - speed, strength = power. But IMO he needs to learn to lower his helmet and bang it up in there.

  • UT needs to keep all 3 in the rotation. Think the Vols need to use each in different way's according to there talents. Lane is a power, north & south back. Neal more of a bounce, east & west back. Speed, slash & punt returns.cool

One thing I've noticed is that we do not run the ball too good with these one back formations. In the later stages of the game I saw them line up in what looked like the strong formation from where I was sitting with an offset fullback. Once they did that I saw some improvement in the running game. I really feel like you need that fullback as an extra blocker bursting through the line to run the ball like I know they want to. I think they need to use a two back formation like that a little more. It can be done without a drop off in the passing attack. Hunter and CP on the outside, Rivera at TE, and you still have two backs to throw to as well. Or drop the TE and get Rogers out there in the slot.

This is very interesting. Since FB/TE is combined.... It's hard for UT to use any type of FB set since there's been so many injuries at TE.

  • Ryan, do you think it's safe to believe that Lane will at least be the 2nd string back on this week's depth chart, if not the first?

  • Neal and Lane are different type backs and we need to use their talents effectively. Lane is a big body and can consistently run between the tackles. He lacks the finishing kick of a Jamal Lewis but is in that mold of back.

Neal is fast with excellent hands and can be used in a multiplicity of roles including slot formations as a receiver. He is not big enough to consistently pound the middle although he can be occasionally used in that role.

Lane should be our fastball and Neal our change-up with Young as an extra.

Regardless we need to find a back that is willing to commit to a hole on short yardage and hit it. That was the one area of disappointment offensively in this game.
