Dooley didn't see any HS player play in person during his time here, one of his many flaws.

Neither does Saban and a lot of coaches. I do agree that a HC should do everything the rules allow and Dooley made mistakes or waited too late........the 2012 class was more focused on instate talent but it was too late. They also finally focused on NC and VA.........too late. Dooley needed to build instate relationships and former players/legacys too of couse.
He did some good things too......lost games......got fired for reason of course.

Of course he did.
If he'd seen him, he would have recruited him (I think)
We still don't know just how poor his recruiting efforts were. What we know is ridiculous enough.

There are many other coaches that dont go to HS games. I am not saying it is right or wrong. That was the least of the issues with Dooley. I like what I am seeing from Butch tho.......maybe he goes to games........maybe he rarely does........maybe he does not at all.

We lost Bell bc of 5-7 vs 12-0 for OSU.....he mentioned winning 1st and often in his interviews.

I'm pretty sure that the first time Saban and Meyer saw him actually play was the state championship game in Atlanta. Because most HS games are on Friday nights, it's hard for the HC to attend the majority of games. The playoffs are the best time in most cases because they fall in that period between the regular season and bowl season.

Spot on. His Dad made sure to get in the dig at Dooley, but the choice belonged to Bell and he picked a stable 12-0 Ohio State over an unstable 5-7 Tennessee team. For a prospect of his caliber, it's about the quickest path to the NFL.
