Did a little research on Larry Fedora

  • I know some were worried about whether or not he would be able to win in the SEC, he was the run game-coordinator in 2002, perimeter game coordinator in 2003, and OC in 2004 on Ron Zook's Staff at Florida. Another interesting note is his tie to Mike Gundy as he joined Gundy's staff at Ok State in 2005 and was his offensive coordinator where he built a reputation as one of the games best offensive minds. He was a highly sought after assistant and just missed out on the Baylor job that went to Art Briles. He then took the job at Southern Miss where they put up their most prolific offense the 4 years he was there. 41-23 overall record. Just thought some of this was interesting given our apparent interest in Gundy which may be why his name keeps popping up. And it was his Southern Miss squad that ruined Kevin Sumlin's Houston squad hope for an undefeated season. So there is some head to head there.

  • Some good info there. I think all of the Gruden talk has obscured the fact that there are several proven head coaches out there that could be a good fit for Tennessee and the SEC as well. Gruden's record was built in the NFL, not in the college ranks, so while he might make a splash in recruiting, there's no guarantees that he could adapt to the college game and relate to the players.

  • I went to some camps he did when he was at MTSU and I know, even at that time, he was well regarded in the coaching community

  • If we are going to go with an up and comer, this is probably the guy that I would look at. Wouldn't really call Strong an up and comer, but would put Fedora right next to him on my desired list. Great info.

  • The only thing that I thought would dampen my outlook for this guy was the fact he was oc at Florida with zook the year he got fired. But they averaged 32 ppg that year. So it looks as the defense may have been mostly to blame. Yes Charlie strong was The dc but I am sure zook was running the D.

  • Fedora is a better choice for UT than Golden, IMO. But I really believe we will do better than either one.

  • Ok so you have forced me to look closer at Fedora. Chris leak threw for 3200 Yds and 29 Tds while ciatrick fason rushed for over 1200 yds and 10 tds. Pretty impressive offensive production considering it was his first year at oc. Now if we were to hire him, who does he go after for his D coordinator?

  • Yeah, I looked up Fedora and found this little nugget on Wikipedia that I liked about what his philosophy would be at NC.

    "He promised to implement an aggressive, attacking philosophy on both sides of the ball, with the same wide-open spread offense he implemented at Southern Miss and a blitz-heavy defense. He summed up his philosophy with a quote from George S. Patton--"Instead of waiting to see what might develop, attack constantly, vigorously and viciously. Never let up, never stop, always attack."[11]"

    I really like that philosophy.

  • Really liked that quote as well, but will that style work in the SEC? This is a different kind of athlete that you arr going against.

  • Bama's and LSU's defenses are aggressive as heck. That philosophy sounds more SEC than ACC.

    Isn't this just a much more accurate regurgitation of Majors' offensive philosophy, who was unable to remember the entire Patton quote, and so just repeated "attack" and threw an "always" in there?

    "Attack, attack, attack . . . always attack."

    And while we're walking down memory lane, remember: "Bright eyed, bushy tailed, and good body lean" for his RBs?

    Here's betting the military quote was watered down from Patton to Neyand, and from Neyland to Majors. And forgive me, Johnny fans, he was tough as nails and could recruit, but I always gave his assistants more credit for our winning during his tenure than him. A great VFL, no doubt, and jobbed for the Heistman by a northeastern, ND-biased media, but he just never seemed very bright to me for some reason. Phillip took complaints about not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he was a good bit sharper than Majors, IMO.

    All the research I needed was a 68 to 50 loss to Ga. Tech. IN FOOTBALL! No thanks to Fedora! If you think we can't play defense now, imagine how bad we would be with Fedora.
