Does this say more about me or the hoops program?

  • For the first time in about 9 or 10 years, I didn't even watch (or DVR to watch later) a game that was on TV and that I was home for. Spent the night playing with the kids and watching Smash (yes, Smash) on the DVR with the wife.

So what does that mean? Is it more about me or does it say more about the program? I don't think there is a "Die Hard" bigger than me out there. I would rather have a great basketball team than football team. But I just don't care. No, scratch that. It's not that I don't care. I do care. But I know what's going to happen. It's inevitable. We're a poorly coached team that executes on that same level that they're coached and we'll be getting a new coach. Whether it's after next year or we waste money extending him after we get to the tourney and it's 3 years down the road. Just a matter of time.

  • I was like this last year with Villanova. I am a huge Villanova fan to. But they were unwatchable. They made the same mistakes every game, had no shooters and no leadership. They had 3 5 stars on that team...

Malik Wayns, Dominic Cheek, and Mouph Yarou.

Every player thought they were better than they were and they made the same mistakes night in and night out

This years team though less talented plays hard and is fun to watch.

I understand what you're going through and I just didn't get emotionally involved. Not sure if that helps, but I feel like we are in similar situations.

I guess the big difference is you had a known quantity with Jay Wright at HC. You knew if something wasn't working, it's probably not because the kids aren't being coached properly. The big piece of the puzzle was already there with Wright.

  • yeah.... I stopped watching in Dec...... Even if one wants to argue that Zo is a good coach, you can't make an argument that his brand of basketball is fun to watch.... very boring brand/type of basketball, and it doesn't seem to be effective either.... We will probably miss the NIT this year and we lost to MTSU in the NIT last year.....

Tennessee and Alabama play the most boring basketball in the world... Are they trying to mold it off of say Wisconsin? Wisconsin plays a slow tempo, plays tough defense, but they also have great shooters and run a beautiful offense. I really don't have a clue what offense Tennessee runs

  • I'm not going to pile on this conversation. Two things though. With the national attention on all the $ we are wasting on buyouts, don't look for a move before the contract lapses. Good news is that Hart played college basketball and will not look past it. Btw, when does Bruce's show cause expire?

  • I have serious doubts about CCM's ability to coach at this level. How many more times do we have to hear during the post game show that "well the guys just came out sluggish" or "we just didn't make enough plays to win" or "well you just have to credit______________for playing a good game and wanting it more than we did". I have held my tongue and am still trying to stay classy about this, but we are out coached nearly every night. This team has talent...it's no final four team, but it definitely should be a tourney team. It is extremely frustrating to spend good money for season tickets and get this product for your money...not acceptable. The effort is not there and the fundamentals are not there. We are losing games to teams we should destroy. I love these guys, and am a huge Vol hoops fan, but I must say that I have reached my breaking point with frustration. These guys are not being coached...plain and simple. I think the world of CCM as a man and as a mentor, but I now have 0% confidence in his ability to coach at this level. I am confident that he gets one more year, but anything short of a tourney appearance and possibly a win or two will be CCM's demise at UT. I hope he can change things. However, anyone who thinks that just by adding 1-2 guys to this roster without significant changes to the schemes and coaching will get us back to being a national threat is crazy. Just my 2 cents.

  • The other thought that I have is that the university cannot afford to have the attendance continue to crash because of the shape that the athletic department is in financially. I wonder if that prompts a change before the 14-15 season. It kills me to see this program that I care so deeply for to be spiraling downward like we are. So for all of you posting above...you are not alone...

  • Let me be clear that it's not a style of ball thing that I have an issue with. When we went to the Elite 8, we were more of a grind it out style. It just depends on the personnel.

What gets me is the lack of adjustments. We get we don't have a PG. How are you tweaking your offense because of that? What are you doing to offset that? Because we don't have one showing up next year. So what is going to happen then?

What about the defense? I thought if everything else fails, we can count on that?

How are we playing to our players' strengths?

I just don't see anything out of CCM that gives me confidence that he gives us an advantage over an opposing coach.

That's my biggest problem. Cuonzo refuses to make adjustments. His answer is always, "we just have to play harder." Playing hard is key, but you have to make adjustments based on your strengths and weaknesses and your opponents weaknesses and strengths.

I agree completely. We throw the ball in to a 2,3, or 4 guy and everyone else bails out down the court while the guy with the ball dribbles to the sideline and picks up his dribble. It is excruciating to watch. Things typically learned at a young age in organized basketball are not being reinforced and executed. And also let's restate that we have not addressed our point guard needs ADEQUATELY for next season as well!

Guess I'm a fair weather fan then, with no knowledge of the game.

  • UT basketball hasn't been this bad to watch since the Kevin O'Neil days.
