DESTIN, Fla. — What does Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley want to happen with the recently jeopardized UT-Alabama rivalry? He discussed that and more with govols247.

  • I liked it better when Alabama would get more wins without having to play powerful Tennessee every year. Can we not just get back to that?

  • Gear stuff, Wes! Do you know if there was much talk about a 9 conference game schedule (which would protect the cross div rivalries and give more cross div rotation)?

Lots of good stuff crammed in there.

Sounds to me like he would like to keep the Alabama-Tennessee annual game, but he's obviously OK with the result (an easier schedule) if the annual rivalry isn't kept.

This was my take as well. +1 for being so smart biggrin

  • I say dump the Bama game. It hasn't meant as much since divisional play started. Since then Florida has been a bigger game than Bama since it has a bigger impact on UT getting to the SEC Championship game. Plus it's got a tradition of being a one sided rivalry that flip flops. Bama wins a bunch in a row, then Tennessee wins a bunch in a row. The future is likely a 16 team league anyway and with that the Bama game will almost certainly go away and Spurrier would likely get his plan with only having 8 divisional games and not playing the West.

  • Wes,

Couldn't the UGA/Buffalo game just go away? It's not like GA Tech beats UGA all that often. biggrin

  • For me, the thing to remember is that CDD is also a lawyer. He chooses his words wisely. I don't think you're going to see him committ one way or the other.

I was wondering if an option of UT vs Alabama in a "non-conference" game has been considered. Wes mentioned above that you have UF/Fla St., Clemson/USC, and UGA/Ga Tech. Can UT play Bama every year and not have it count as a conference game except when UT vs Bama is on the normal rotation (6-2)? If they want to keep the rivalry, it's an option. Same goes for UGA and Auburn.

  • Continued good reporting. Dooley was usin g his lawyer experience not to answer any question or let it slip as to the preference he has on the schedule realignment. I say what ever decision the commissor and the ADs come up with will be fine. It is normal to be reluctant to change, BCS a good example, but change it will be, so strap it on and play whether it be FB or BB.

Very interesting outside the box thought.

  • I don't understand the big deal here. Why is everyone scared of a hard schedule? I, for one, say that we should play Bama every year, I don't care how good they are. I promise you it won't be long and Bama will be scared of the powerful Vols. I don't want an easier schedule. Nothing easy shows how good you are. We are Tennessee! Do you think General Neyland would say this, "We need to dump Alabama off the schedule so we can have a chance at getting some more wins." I don't think so.

I think that's a pretty good idea! If your traditional rival just happens to be in the other SEC division, like UT/UA and UGA/AU, then they can still play, but not count in the SEC record.

    +1 to you sir!

Absolutely agree! I can't stand the thought of backing down from anybody. Let's just rise to their level instead. No need to take an easier road. We are the might Vols!
