Dooley: Bray can, might be benched

The buzz about Tyler Bray heading into this season was whether UT's junior quarterback would ever be a senior. Now the buzz is whether Bray will remain UT’s first-teamer.

  • Nice work, Wes. I believe in Justin Worley. Seems like he has more poise about him than Bray and that he WANTS to win. I prefer that over big statistics. I want to see what Worley can do with this offense. I believe in him.

  • There are some players on this team who's NFL stock for next year is plummeting. I just wonder if that is possibly getting into some of their heads and affecting performance. That makes for a ficious cycle.

  • I don't think Bray has that winner mentality. Guy has all the talent in the world, but he checks out way too much. I think Tennessee will be better off when he declares for the draft.

Dooley critical of Bray: QB needs to "man up"

Derek Dooley surprised media today with his criticism of junior quarterback Tyler Bray. Dooley has been one of Bray's biggest supporters in the past, but following the 31-point loss to Alabama and Bray ducking out of postgame media availability, the Tennessee coach had a few words to say about his play and attitude.

  • I noticed how quick Bray throws the ball away and it's great to not take a sack. It seems, at times, he may make that decision too quick. He also seems to stare down his receivers.

  • Bray has a lot of talent but he'll never be a leader and he cries too much and again I am so sick and tired of hearing our players say "we just didn't execute". Well no s*** you didn't execute

  • Jon Gruden could fix that in about two practices.

  • I still believe Bray gives us the best chance to succeed at the QB position. I hope he takes this as motivation and begins to live up to his potential.

  • Question: What are our fan's two favorite people?? The next coach and the back-up quarterback. Let's be careful in what we ask for..Just saying...

  • I'm not happy with the way Bray's played the heart of our SEC schedule. (Who is?) That said, I'm not sure if he's just saying the right things in this article or if this is a sign he really is maturing. The guy's undeniably got an arm. Maybe he's turning a corner maturity-wise and in his understanding of the game.

I think that may have happened earlier in the year, but at this point, I'm skeptical that any of our Jr skill players are going to be leaving after this season. Even if they have great games the rest of the year and put up great numbers, the rap on them is going to be they could only do that against lesser competition, not in the big-name games when it really mattered (both for the team and for them as individuals).

Who could they blame the failure on? The OL has pass protected great all year (maybe some of the Jr OL-men might go pro). We've had at least a solid running game this year. Everyone's been more or less healthy this year. We had two (not just one) outstanding receivers on the field every game -- so you can't say defenses keyed on the lone star we had. So what's the defense for a poor showing going to be? It seems in the interest of all 3 pre-season favorite Jr's to return to UT next year to (as you say) boost their NFL stock.

  • I was hoping for success this year to help usher Bray on to the NFL, but that is seeming very unlikely at this point. I would have loved for Hunter to stay but he has been playing scared against SEC foes, in my opinion. Patterson has not been involved enough to really get drafted where he wants right now, but he is the only one I would be excited to see back next year. I'm not normally big on talking down about our players, so hopefully somethings clicks and this team finds success sooner rather than later.

I was high on Bray for a while. After watching him play against SEC's defenses, he just doesn't seem to have that it factor. He's got talent, but the lights are not coming on upstairs. I'd rather have a Driskel at qb than someone playing like Bray. His numbers aren't flashy, but he makes plays for his team in crucial situations. That's the type of qb I want at Tennessee.

  • ? Does Tyler ever check to a better play at the line on his own? I cannot recall him ever doing it. The only time we ever audible is when the entire team looks at the sideline for the call. Three years in and I wonder how much the kid actually knows about the offense still.

  • Great clip of Coach's comments on Bray. I love the way he just lays it all out there. He is so blunt and so honest. All the fan base should just chill and stop criticizing Coach. Relax, when it's time for Coach to leave the program, he'll be the first to tell us.

I just love the guy. Coach keep laying it on the line and I'll keep supporting you.

Hang tough Vols, we're in a long protracted war. It won't come easy. Hang tought Vol Nation.

  • Benching Bray whether he needs it or not just will make the issue worse Bray is all about Bray. I understand the Quarterback position needs the good athelete but sometimes the best quarterback isn't the first stringer. Worley may be a good in game QB knowing how to check down and just throw it away when need be. This is the area Bray is horrible at. He is always looking for Hunter, always looks right first and so on. I am not a coach but geez even I can read him and what his tendenacys are. What position is the toughest match up on the field, some say WR or TB but I think if you got a good TE he is the toughest, it is hard for LB to cover a TE. This is where Bray should go Micheal Riveria come on down Bray needs you badly
