Two days after another loss “that was hard to take,” Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley met with reporters to ... talk about the team he’s still coaching.

  • Good read Wes! DD can lawyer talk with the best of em!
So,,, how are you going to fix it?? Lol!!
Not much of an answer there from the coach huh?
I give him this much! He has made our program better than it was when he got here, but the SEC is a monster right now!! It's gonna eat coaches & players that aren't up to snuff!
I believe CDD is a good/decent coach. But not an excelant/SEC caliber coach. Can we do better??? I'm not sure! I'd like to think we could. But as far as coaches that are out there for us to possibly get,, who's it gonna be? Gruden?? Doubtful!! Strong? Can he coach in the SEC?? Stoops? Not a big game coach! & there are big games week end & week out!
So,,,, idk! I would just like for us to win! As much as anyone else.
    GO BIG ORANGE!!!

Pete, you just summed up the way I feel but I don't know if he is an SEC caliber coach. Would he be as good as some of these other guys if he had the players? Will he be able to get the players without winning more? I am at the 'paralysis by analysis' stage.confused

  • Nope don't think so.If he wanted to coach again he would have taken the "plunge" by now and I suspect it wouldn't be at TN or the collegiate level. Now would he be open to a pro coaching job?......maybe.I respect your opinion ,just wanted to voice mine.GBO

  • Actually, your comment is exactly why we have lost at least two of the five SEC games we lost. Third and goal against SC and they throw a pass to the TE who is between two Tennessee defenders at the six yard line. Both defenders try to shoulder tackle the guy and he breaks through and falls into the end zone. A simple form tackle takes the guy down at the five and SC is kicking a FG. Difference, four points. We lost by three. You can find a similar play against GA and MS. That's not coaching, it's players executing and not falling in love with watching themselves on ESPN.

  • Of course, having said all that, there is simply no excuse for our defense since most of these defenders were here last year when we were 100x better.

  • Why was the rumor that he would be fired on Monday? Does that happen? I'm not up on this kind of stuff, but I don't recall college coaches being fired during the season so recklessly very often. I mean, who steps in? You can't put a new coaching staff in during the season, and we all saw from the Miss. State game that there's not competent second-in-command to walk the sidelines like Fulmer did back in Major's day. If I was Dave Hart and I had somebody great on the hook, I'd be privately working out the post-season transition details with him and keeping everything close to the vest. Your current guy is fine for managing the rest of the regular season and hopefully winning out. Then splash, boom, bam in early December. (Yeah, I would try to put in a full-fledged transition between season and (hopefully) bowl game. If you planned it with the new guy quietly and thoroughly enough, it could be done.)

  • If Dooley wins out and has a good bowl showing, he stays at least one more year. The budget says cannot and, therefore, the lack of dollars to spend on "name" says we will not make a change.
