Dooley Did Not Manage Well

  • 615Vol said...

Man, don't worry about all these people getting onto you. Anybody could see the game management was terrible yet again. The playcalling is iffy, yet again. Do I have to mention yet another throw in the middle of the field at the goalline??? Just please for the love of everything that is good in this world, stop throwing in the middle of the field when near the goalline. It flat-out aint working and is COMPLETELY obvious now. It turned the game completely around.People ignoring that just have orange-shaded glasses on and don't want to hear criticism, even when it's legit criticism.

Besides the horribly coached offense, that defense showed out tonight. I figured they matched up well to Vandy and I was right. Made adjustments to the underneath stuff as evident by the two interceptions late in the game. Wilcox will be a stud when the secondary gets more speed. Have to keep him on staff. Get the JUCO haul in recruiting and the defense will be very, very solid next year. Up to UT standards.

Are you making the assumption that we only had one receiver/route going to the middle of the field as the only option? I do believe there were most likely 3 live options, and that the QB does have some role in that process. Not saying you are wrong, but I think it is easy for fans to jump to simple conclusions about a very complicated game plan. For the most part, we can't tell a check or hot read from the huddle play call. We don't know when someone runs the wrong route or when the QB just forces something. Heck, on at least one play Bray called something different because he misunderstood the play call. It's easy to second guess and coach from your couch after seeing how things turned out. As a HS Defensive Coordinator, I can tell you it's much more difficult on the sideline when you don't know what's happened yet. And a lot of things happen to make plays go wrong, much of which the average fan will never know about. I think we owe our coaches a little benefit of the doubt. I don't think the play-calling was very iffy, just that the QB was playing a little rusty.

Thanks for proving my point... What did they call in that situation??? A FADE to DaRick. I called that many games ago. After the South Carolina game, in fact. About time they tried it. If it failed, I would've been OK with it. Look in my archive. I promise it's there.

And please tell me how I'm wrong? Similar plays have miserably failed three separate times in three separate games in three similar situations! All three interceptions have occurred right at the goalline with passes to the middle.Trying to keep pushing that button is just bad play calling, pure and simple. The Vandy guy was just sitting on that route. He knew it was coming. Would you keep putting your hand on a hot stove??? Of course not!! Why??? Because past experiences told you it was a major fail!!

Seriously would love to see a stat as to where most passing touchdowns are scored and where most interceptions are thrown from about the five-yard line and in (i.e. where the defense is jumbled in the middle, especially at the goalline). No clue if there actually is such a stat.

He didn't say you were wrong, he just said that your opinion on a matter doesn't make it truth. Chill out bro, it's not personal, just people airing out opinions. BTW, I didn't know that you called plays after the SC game. It's important to remember that none of us are college coaches for a reason.

I don't think anyone is arguing Dooley and his staff are flawless. There are just some who obviously have more confidence in the staff than you do.

That's OK. You're allowed to have different viewpoints. thumbsup

1:40 mark. four receivers out there. THREE were in the middle of the field. The fourth was in the corner.... Yeah, but the play wasn't designed to go there huh

Two UT players were about 2-3 yards apart at the goalline. The third was directly behind one of them. Just not sure how that is a successful play design to have three guys that close together where the defense is going to be jumbled anyway. All the space was on the outside, as I imagine is usually the case at the goalline. The ball should've been there sooner, though, right when Rivera turned around. Poor play design AND execution.

And the USC call that got all this started. 1:30 mark. 9 of 11 defenders are within the hashmarks. Yet, this play is clearly designed to go where most of the defenders reside. Maybe some think the play didn't work because of execution, but that's just not smart a smart playcall either.

  • just to further my point. UT has had 16 scores this year (that i could find highlights of) where the situation I'm trying to convey has occurred (i.e. around the 10-yard line and in where the defense is compacted in the middle.)

ZERO times were they successful with a pass going to the middle of the field for a score... ZERO. The breakdown is below. So yes, going over the middle in that situation is rarely successful so why keep forcing it???

    montana, pass outside... run... run

    twice in cincy.. both runs

    florida, pass to outside

buffalo, pass to outside... pass to outside... pass to outside

    UGA... run

    LSU... run the ball

    Bama... no TDs

    USC... no TDs

    arkansas... run

    MTSU... run ball... run ball

    Vandy... run...pass outside

  • I can't believe some people want to get rid of Chaney.... That would be really stupid.... Have you seen the current state of our roster???? If you are expecting a potent offense with the current personal we have, you are living lala land or smoking crack....

First off, our offense looked really good when everyone was healthy.... I'm not sure why anyone would think our offense would be productive with an inexperienced OL, only one real WR, and Matt Simms/Worley at QB....

No offensive Coordinator would have a high-powered offense when working with what I just listed, especially when you are facing SEC defenses every week....

Additionally, Our offense looked really good against Vandy considering the fact that Bray hasn't played in over one month, Da'Rick Rogers is the only sec caliber WR currently active on our roster, and our play calling was extremely limited due to Bray's thumb...

Let's be realistic with our expectations.... When you can only run the shot gun and a formation that you haven't used yet this year (the pistol), you are going to limited schematically..... I think producing a 100 yard rusher and winning a game when you are only using about 25% of your playbook is one hell of a coaching job by Chaney...

One more point, why would you want to install a new offensive system next year??? It would set us back a lot in terms of rebuilding......

I have a feeling that all of the Chaney nay-sayers will be back on the bandwagon next year when they see what he is capable of doing with an experienced and healthy offense.....

You have to run the ball to win in this league. Chaney gets very pass happy. We are a soft team up front and I think we need a new mindset. We need to hit people in the mouth and we just don't do it. I am in favor of either Chaney or Hiestand going but 1 of them should go.
