Dooley: 'I've given my all'

Derek Dooley apologized for a failure to "general enough wins to create hope for a brighter future," but the dismissed football coach said he's "given my all for Tennessee."

  • You know, I believe he did give his all. And if you're honest, this season could have been a whole lot different without 3 fumbles on game winning drives (USCe, MSState, UGA).

We definitely need to try something else, the late season meltdowns are unacceptable. But I believe he was closer to success than most people are giving him credit for.

Very well said! After Mizzou I accepted that we had to make a change and last night amplified that need but I believe CDD did "give his all for Tennessee" AND he did a lot to clean up the "off the field" mess lame kitten left behind! A friend of mine said CDD will be remembered as the placeholder between the last great Vols run and the next one and I agree. I believe and hope he will move on to succeed in time with another progam but Tennessee is not a place to "train" new head coaches. Mr. Hart, please know that and hire a proven head coach who has demonstrated he can win at this level! Best of luck to you, Coach Dooley, and thanks for representing UT with class and dignity even in you comments today!

  • I have no doubt, that he did indeed give it his all and I really wish things would have went a lot different for him. Thanks Coach Dooley and best of luck in the future, you'll always be a VFL in my book.

  • Thank you, Coach Dooley. I really think he gave his all for this program. He recruited, he solved the discipline issues and he restored stability to a program that was utterly volatile at the time of his hire. I know that the win/loss record has led most of us to believe that the last 3 years have been a waste, but we all would be remiss to ignore the effort that Coach Dooley gave as well as the building blocks that he has laid down for the next regime. Thank you Coach Dooley, and good luck to you in all of your future endeavors.

  • If Hart doesn't work out, I'd almost like to give Dooley a shot at AD. I think he would make a much better AD than HC. I know that's not where his passion is, but I think it's where his strength exists. He's organized, smart, understands the business, and has a legal background that would come in very beneficial with contract negotiations.

Looking at things through the same legal background, I've often thought the same. His skillset dovetails w/AD; it appears to be a round peg in a square hole with head coaching.

And should the naysayers point out that Mike Leach is a lawyer who's been successful as a HC, he's also been fired at one place for locking a kid in a storage building, and may be fired for player abuse at his current job. He is also a "pirate afficionado". He ain't yer typical lawyer.

No one EVER accused the man of not working hard or putting in enough time. Sometimes you do your very best and give your absolute all and still fail. It's ugly, but it's just how life works.

  • I don't think anybody questions Dooley's work ethic, it's just he isn't a good coach. It's not made for everybody... I'm excited to finally move forward.
