Dooley Supporters?

  • Why do so many on this board continue to support Derek Dooley? I have been more than patient with him and felt I gave him a fair shot. I knew 2010 would be terrible. I accepted the excuses last year with 2 key players getting injured. I didn't fault him when so many assistants left during the offseason. I said the day he was hired that 2012 was the year he had to start producing results. This year's schedule is the easiest it has been in 3 or 4 years. I chalked @UGA and Bama up as loses. I excepted us to win 2 of 3 against Florida, @MS State, and @USCe, and put a minimum at 1. We won 0. We played Troy to a 1 TD game at home for Chirst's sake. We have not improved. Basically what I am getting at, how can anyone feel that this man is right for the job? What gives you a reason to think he can get it done? I'm honestly just curious to see the Pro-Dooley people's opinions because I just don't see it.

  • I'm sorry your high hopes were dashed. So you really expected Dooley to take one of the worst teams in the country and have them beating top 10 teams in such a short time? He hasn't even had a full senior class yet. So, fair shot? I disagree. I'm not happy with things, but Dooley hasn't had a fair shot.

  • I will support the HC for UT til he is no longer as he is the face of our program + its best for the program. Now if a HC was doing more off the field to hurt UTs program that would be different but Dooley is doing his all for UT but it just has not shown up in wins but it is easy to see he is a VFL and loves UT. I also think he just got the job at a horrible time where I am not sure any coach wins more than 2-4 more games the last few years than he has but those wins needed to happen. He has had some awful luck with injuries too. But it is what it is now.

Simple answer......I am not going to hate on our HC. I will disagree and bring up what I think is wrong but I am not going to call for his head like some have done even prior to the KY game last year and some from day 1.

  • Don't get me wrong. I do note hate Dooley at all. I loved his quotes. I loved the orange pants. But that's about all we've gotten. I think he has done his best and really cares about UT, but is that all his job calls for? No. He was hired to win games. Guys we're 0-5 in the SEC. If we win out, which is not guaranteed, we're still 3-5 in the SEC. That's not acceptable at UT. Our schedule was set up this year for a minimum of 8 regular season wins. Mississippi State is garbage. Kevin Sumlin proved that. Besides the D-line, USCe is very average. Without Lattimore like they were for a half, they are not very good. Should've won both. Yes we beat Troy, but are you kidding me. That was an embarrassment. I hoped Dooley would get it done and I believed it until my trip to Starksville, but I just do not see it, and believe I've seen enough to support that.

Excellent rebuttal SV. There's a lot of good things Dooley has done for the football program and for it's image. Unfortunately, winning the tough games has not been one of them. But as long as he is HC of the Vols, I stand with you. +1 and GO VOLS!

when hired I said he needed 5 years to see if he could transform the program to being competitive. I still think that is a valid tmieframe for anyone taking on this program at that time. unfortunately, the fans are streaming away in droves. more and more aer giving up each day.

I agree going into season, most everyone felt UT would be more competitive and have a chance versus several schools we have lost too. I think the D is far worse than anyone, including Dooley and majority of fans, every had idea it would be. I also think that 3 teams we have lost to are better than most anyone thought they would be.

Makes it very difficult on the decision makers when revenues are plunging and it appears there would be a pretty siginificant drop in ticket sales if CDD back.

  • I support CDD for the following reasons:
    - I don't like hiring someone to a 4-5 year rebuilding job and then 3 years getting excited about the team they built and saying it is make or break year. If I am excited about the team they built I think the coach probably did a few things right.
    - This is just my opinion, I think coaches get teams to the 4th quarter, and players win in crunch time. There was a great post earlier this week about our drives in the 4th quarter with a chance to tie or take the lead, haven't scored once (changed since Troy). To me, that is Bray, Hunter, and CP not seizing the moment more so that a coach not doing his job.
    - I don't look at rankings for recruiting as much as others, but I think CDD has brought in a ton of talent across the program. The reason we are playing UF, UGA, and SCar close is because we have the talent to do so. Just look at the past few NFL drafts compared to the ones coming up.
    - Fan apathy says more about our fans imo than anything else. The people giving up season tickets and going to games now are not all of a sudden going to come back after Mullen, Strong, Smart etc...go 7-5 in year 1 to support UT in year 2.
    - Hiring a good coach is really hard. Look at CLK right now, he basically has what CDD would have if everyone came back next year, and they have 3 losses already. They could still lose to ND and UCLA, making them 6-5 with all that talent leaving this year.
    - Homerum hires are not out there imo with the exception of Gruden. The Mullen crowd is pretty funny to me considering coming into the year he had the same problems against ranked teams as CDD did and it looks like he will after this year too.
    - Stability counts for something. I don't think it should be too much of a surprise that our O is great and Chaney has been here building his system for 4 years and our D is horrible with its third DC in 4 years.

Sorry for the long post and please note I am not arguing that CDD is the best coach in the SEC or the coach who will lead us to a championship, I just think he is the best option for the program continuing to improve.

  • So, here's the problem. He hired an unproved DC and completely changed schemes in year 2,3 4 or whatever year he says it is. Say he goes 7-5 or 8-5 or 7-6 and is retained. Who is the DC next year? Do stick with what has been a disaster? Or go out and hire someone, and what half way DC is going to come here knowing what shape our HC is in regarding job security? And don't forget Chaney'd contract is up too, so will be installing a new offense too?

  • I simply wish the keyboard coaches would tire of berating Coach Dooley on a daily/hourly basis. I would think we are ALL frustrated as hell and arguing among ourselves is not going to influence Dave Hart in any way.

  • To be fair, Dooley inherited the implosion of Fulmer's final recruiting class and Kiffin's only recruiting class. It was so bad that UT could not even fill out the 85 scholarship NCAA limit (they were at about 60-65 players). In 2010, when UT went to LSU, two-thirds of their team had never even Dressed for a college road game (much less played in one). Dooley's takeover at UT was not just a simple case of a big name school fallen on a couple of tough years. The situation that Dooley inherited was more akin to a program bouncing back from the NCAA death penalty. We are just now at the 85 scholarship limit.

Don't get me wrong, the defense is horrible. I think Sunseri should have been fired - or at least demoted to LB coach - This Morning (with Conklin the new DC). I am still not convinced that Dooley is a good in-game coach (although I think he is a good organizer - which is perhaps what the program needed following Kiffen's departure). However, anyone who thought that this mess would be cleaned up in three years either did/does not have a real view of the state of the program that Dooley took over, is in denial, or just like to bitch. The team IS better than it was 4 or 5 years ago. The problem is - so are AL, SC, LSU, etc.

Again, I am not 100 percent sure Dooley is the answer, but this situation was not simply a matter of a new coach coming in, talking a good game, installing a new offensive/defensive scheme and going out and winning like UT used to. The program was literally a disaster when Dooley took over. And I mean disaster (Earthquake, followed by massive fire, followed by Tsunami). No One wanted this job (yes - there is room to bitch about what $$ were offered and to whom). However, the disastrous state of the UT program after Kiffen left can't be overstated or overlooked in this discussion - particularly unless there is a sure-fire, can't miss, big name head coach ready to be the next head coach at UT. At this point, I don't see one.
