Dooley: UK loss will 'help' Bray

Derek Dooley recently sat down for a two-hour conversation with Tyler Bray, and UT's coach said he feels "great" about his starting quarterback's start to the offseason.

  • Good stuff Wes. Though I hated losing to Kentucky, I thought this experience would create the "suffering" necessary for some good learning to take place for the players and the coaches - some needed "looking in the mirror" so to speak. I think winning and going to a bowl game would have given them an inflated sense of how good they were. While it stinks to not go to a bowl, etc. I agree with Dooley that it could be good in the long run. I hope that proves true when we look back in November and December of 2012. Go Vols!

  • Great article Wes! I like hearing what is going on behind the scenes rather than all the chatter from outsiders that don't really know what is going on.

  • Great stuff, Wes. I could see Tyler exploding next year if his head's in the right place. Sounds like he'll be ready to go.

  • When he was at UT, Peyton Manning said he hated to lose more than he liked to win. I'm not happy to lose to KY or to see one of our players in misfortune, but I am glad that losing really upset Bray. Seems to remove any doubt about the team's over-all record mattering to him.

Bray's obviously got tons of talent. If he pushed himself to improve, I think it's very likely the team as a whole would follow his example.

  • Sometimes all of us, as fans identify ourselves with the win/loss column in UT football. We
tend to take out our frustrations on coaches and players with a loss and overreact when they perform well. Life requires that we let these players know how important it is to have an even keel when it comes to wins and losses. Occasionally you will have a bad apple that will cause other players to lose their perspective, however if the coaches do their job there won't be many.We all know that posters, blogs, and message boards are full of bs. comments that hurt players (most 18 to 20 year olds) and cause additional work for cioaches spending time helping these young men deal with crap that is meanngless instead of focusing on staying positive and improving their skills each day.Dooley is a honorable man that grew up with a rich tradition of coaching and love for the sec. I think we
should support his efforts and get behind the program and the coaches as they work their butts off you and I should do the same.If a player is given a second chance and helped with support in the class room and continues to screw up they need to try someplace else no matter which player it is.A coach should be treated the same way but my God, everthing is relevent. Just because the folks in the "cheap seats" can't brag a year or two about beatin bama, geogia, lsu, and other top SEC programs so what! Tennessee's demise happened before Dooley arrived and he knew it. Thank God he had the balls to step in to the fire and try to right the ship. Like in Life you have men that step into the arena and you have spectators that offer no support in the cheap seats, that criticize and spew venom because they can't brag about how good we are through no effort they have contributed
either as fans or on the field.
One time I was pressuring my son to play better on the golf couse so much so that a nice lady playing with us asked me if I had ever played? I had but I desrved that question for the
pressure I was putting on him. I will always remember that. she made a very good point! I
will not get the chance to correct my stupid ways. You will never know how much a positive word and your support may mean to a player or coach!

  • When Justin Hunter (In my opinion the TRUE LEADER of the team) went down, it was like the whole team went down with him. The key for Tennessee will be to find 21 more Justin Hunter type guys. That's the difference between Tennessee and winning programs at the moment.
