Dooley, UT fans chat culture change

For all the things Derek Dooley doesn’t enjoy discussing about his UT football program, the third-year coach never minds chatting about what he considers an improving culture.

  • How can anyone think Dooley shouldn't be given a couple more years? Everyone should no Tennessee is behind the 8 ball from a recruiting standpoint and the SEC is insanely tough these days, but I think he can be a great leader for the Vols.

  • Question the guy's in-game management if you want, but I love his public speaking and his honesty in his answersvols

  • He can talk talk and talk some more. One day he is going to have to win a football game. The teams that win are the ones that block and tackle and take care of the football. Don't need him to reinvent football. Need him to teach blocking and tackling. He might be good but right now is results are not good.

  • Thanks Wes. A great report. I love to hear Coach talk about the heart of program.

You know guys, it’s just plain old hard to crawl back up to the top. We can look at other programs and see perfect examples of how tough it is--- and it would be hard for any program in the country to come back after what happened at Tennessee with those wild years we had. So, we have to buckle up and love our school-- be devoted to our tradition, while we go through the rebuilding process.

I recommend to all you guys a great devotional book written by Ed McMinn, Daily Devotions for Die Hard Fans: Tennessee Volunteers. It has 90 daily devotionals that start with a piece of Vol sports history from the very beginning. I’ve learned so much about the history of the Vols and how rich and amazing our program is. Example: 1965 and the Vols are 2-0-2 and starting week five preparing for a game against Houston. But on Monday, three coaches were killed in their car in west Knoxville when it was hit by a train. Johnny Majors’ younger brother Bill, along with Bob Jones, and Charlie Rash all perished that day: three coaches gone. AD Bob Woodruff and Coach Dickey decided to play the game anyway. The Vols stuck together, won the game, and pressed on. In 1970, when the Vols played the Bear’s Tide, the Vols intercepted the Alabama eight times! Tim Priest collected three for himself and the Vols won 24-0. There are a multitude of stories that reflect the great pride and history of our program.

The bottom line is we have a great program and we will get to the top again. As I’ve read these stories I sensed a rich spirit and passion, deeply proud of the character of the Vol nation. I think we have a coach now who understands the Vol tradition; he admires it; embraces it; sees it as the final destination that any coach would dream of. Not like a Kiffin, who is a hired gun, using his stop here as a stepping stone. Coach Dooley gets it and he burns inside to see the Vols on top again. And I think he’s smart enough to understand how it breaks down and how to put a program and processes in place to build it back up.

We all want our program to return to the top tier and to be a program of class again. I think we are on the road to success. I hope we have the patience to see it through. I hope and pray for Coach D to be successful. I think he has the heart of a true Vol. If he succeeds, we all succeed.

Patience grasshopper. The wins are coming. The foundation has been laid. 80% of the pieces are in place. It's only a matter of time.

  • It only makes it worse to recruit when the fans start the "firing talk" only two and a half years in. Now the other coaches are telling our high recruits that we are talking about firing our coach. That never never helps. You need to give a coach four to five years especially when you go through what we have gone through.please tell me someone agrees and understands.
Please be just a little patient.

  • Great answers to those questions.

One question: what is the "unity council" Dooley mentioned?

    smasher423

  • Dooley has this team on the right track. Patience is a virtu my friends!

"In 1970, when the Vols played the Bear’s Tide, the Vols intercepted the Alabama eight times! Tim Priest collected three for himself and the Vols won 24-0. There are a multitude of stories that reflect the great pride and history of our program".

I was fortunate enough to be on that 11-1 team. We had been told Scott Hunter (Bama QB) was hurt and not gonna play.. Apparently Bear was trying to surprise us AND give the Bammers a big "lift" when he put Scott in the game.. 8 interceptions ! Ouch ! 24-0 and smoking a traditional victory cigar after the game...Priceless..

3 seasons later I signed with Green Bay where Scott was the starting QB. Scott was from Mobile Al., and I'm from Montgomery. Needless to say I had a little fun reminding Scott of his "record setting" 3rd Saturday in October.. To my knowledge that 2ndary still holds the Tennessee record (and NCAA I think) with 36 interceptions (12 games including a Sugar Bowl victory).

Wow! That's amazing. What a special time you played in. I hope that we can return to those days. Thanks for your investment into our rich history. And thanks for still being here and sharing it with the rest of us. You're obviously a Vol for Life.

I think we're on the right track and Coach Dooley is the man to lead us back. I say we all commit to stay positive and back our program all the way. Critique and constructive criticism? Yes, always. But never negative spin and depressing whinning.

Buckle up! The Vols are on the way!

Well all right then, but the inane conversation about a signature win has become a bore. We need to see this team improve and the trend be one of increasing competitiveness. That is what we are seeing currently. The guy is also learning how to coach at this level, understandably, as he's never been here before. Under Hamilton we kept hiring guys in all sports that hadn't coached on the SEC/D1 level before, they have to adjust. Dooley is a young coach who came to us with no experience at this level. He'll get there given the space to do so. Why the heck Hamilton always went after inexperienced coaches, other than for low pay, I'll never know but that's what he did and that's what we're left with. We just cannot afford to ditch this guy right now. Another apple basket turnover would set us back years.

Coonhound, I see you point as it applies to "head coach" experience and agree with you there. Sure it would have been nice to be able to hire the perfect man with tons of experience to take over back then. But when Kiffin ditched us the way he did, he left a stench so awful that most people wouldn't even talk to us.

Now, I was no Hamilton fan, but what he did was look for someone with lots of experience as an assistant and some as a head coach at a lower tier program. Dooley was with Saban at LSU in super successful, glory years and he wasn’t' a peon on his staff, he was an integral part of coaching and recruiting. His program at LSU won a National Title. So he has very valuable experience in the SEC--- National Champion type of experience. And the same goes for his time in the NFL. While Saban's tenure at Miami was not successful, it is nonetheless great exposure that will translate to college play and give a background for relating to recruits who hope to play on Sundays.

So, I'm not bashing your post or your position on things, but I do think there is a lot of positive for us to see along with the negative we have to live with. And I couldn't agree with you more when you said, "He'll get there given the space to do so." Well said.

Buckle up! The Vols are on the way!
