Dooley dismisses dismissal reports

  • It seems like it would be a good idea for Hart to go ahead and make a decisive statement either backing Coach Dooley or just cutting him loose. This is obviously the biggest/toughest decision of Hart's Tennessee career but I don't see how UT is going to get any recruits to commit at this point with all the uncertainty.

The early enrollees will make their decisions now, but all other recruits will wait until mid-Feb to sign LOI's. Maybe Dooley's suggestion that if he goes 6-6 he can save his job is right and that's why Hart's waiting.

Thing is, if Dooley scraped by on 6-6 & a bowl this year, he's going to have an uphill battle with the fan base next season. Maybe he could salvage that with some early season wins over significant competition, but if not, I could see next season becoming a full-fledged meltdown real quick. We're darn near there today. If it happened early next season, that would really prolong the train wreck.

Its interesting that Hart is not talking about this but Dooley is.

Everyone knows that he is getting fired, including Dooley. This talk about being lied to is just a gratuitous shot at the AD on the way out the door. I hope Dooley can manage to handle this with class. I would imagine that he hopes to continue to work in college FB.

I don't see the "gratuitous shot". Seems to me that he is simply saying that he trusts Hart, and Hart hasn't told him he is fired yet. Therefore, he has no reason to believe he is fired...yet.

    Agree 100% ericstubb.

Just stating the obvious, but this whole PR situation is FUBAR (pardon the bluntness). PR fiasco at the admin & AD level...it's like amateur hour and it's playing out on the nat'l sports stage! Come on Hart, get in front of this mess with some kind of statement. This silence from the leadership is absolutely deafening...and putting CDD and the team out there taking the heat from the press w/all the speculation swirling only adds fuel to fire. Public relations 101 guys...if Hart & Cheek are really that clueless on how to manage the inevitable coaching transition (not like they didn't know it was a real possibility for the past 6 months...it's called contingency planning!) and the resulting messaging, maybe they can tap one of those sr. prof's over in the Communications College for a little tune-up? This whole thing is a growing embarrassment to the University. Quickly becoming a unmitigated PR disaster that could have all kinds of ripple effects.

Feel really bad for the players...particularly the SR's who been through so much. Gotta keep supporting the team everyone! GBO!

  • I am amazed at the people who run there mouth on these post and then get goose bumps that what they as experts have said is or needs to happen may not happen.
They wanted to fire Mike K. at Duke after his third year because of a losing record in year two and three of his tenure. Some said he made some bad decisions during the games. I don't know how many times I have sat in business meetings and someone was asked to make a decision and it took them to next day to make it, not in a split second of a game. People usually learn from thier mistakes.

  • Great post. I think the biggest challenge at SC for Spurrier was getting over the losing mindset. Holtz never could get them there.

  • This situation is a disaster. Maybe we really don't have the money to hire and fire right now.
