Dooley exit plan being discussed

No official announcement has come from UT, but multiple sources told govols247 on Saturday night that exit-strategy plans are being discussed for football coach Derek Dooley.

  • No win situation on the timing. Do it now, and you crush team morale and probably a shot at a bowl. Wait until the season ends and deal with all the speculation and rumor and angst as our recruits drop off like flies. This just blows. Cant believe this is happening. Again.

I'm just not sure letting Dooley go and promoting Chaney, Graham, or Hinshaw would be a blow to team morale. I would bet there's a likelihood it could boost it!!!

After talking to Swain, I'm inclined to agree.

The team already knows. How can they not? It's about pride and UT now.

Odds are we aren't winning next week with Dooley. I'd take my chances with an interim, lord knows game management can't get much worse.

    Good point.

The team could possibly pull together and have an "us against the world" mentality. I think keeping Dooley until the end of the year could possibly, I stress possibly, be more detrimental than letting him finish out the year. If the kids know he's gone, then they might tune him out. Just possibilities.

Don't worry, it will be almost impossible to do worse than that Water head AD Hamilton! Good luck, I am hoping that UT can get better and can make the UF-UT game a huge rivalry game again!

  • Maybe they do like Kentucky and tell him he can continue through the last two games. I hate it for the team and I was a big supporter of Dooley, but after yesterday I lost faith.

  • Although I am quite disappointed with our football performance the past few years, I would like to thank coach Dooley for his dedication and endless hours of hard work under very difficult circumstances. I would hope that everyone will allow him and his family to leave with dignity. I know that he has young children and I pray that the Tennessee family will not say anymore awful things that will hurt those children. I'm excited about a new beginning but at the same time I'm saddened that coach Dooley didn't win some games. Coach Dooley, thank you for your integrity and God bless you and your family.

  • How long until the world wide leader blows this open? Possibly forces Tennessee's hand on quicker formal announcement then they want?

I also hope that his family is treated with respect on the way out. I don't have any sympathy for Dooley, though. He was paid very well to do a job and he will be paid even better not to coach the next 3 seasons. It is pretty obvious he was not ready to coach at this level but I could see him being a good assistant on someone's staff in the future.

  • I feel as if team morale could explode...in a positive way. Win two for the coaches! With that said, you don't pay a $5,000,000 buyout to hire an up-and-comer...let's hit a grandslam and turn this ship around. Go Vols!!!

  • After yesterday (if not sooner) it became just a matter of time, but I still think university should try to do this with class. After Kiffingate he has certainly raised the talent level at UT, he has turned around the perception of the character of the team, & he helped put an exceptional offensive team on the field, & he has done it with a fair amount of class. I just hope administration figures a way to get this done that will honor what has been accomplished & will show appreciation for the players.

  • No good way to do this. But once it's done everybody including dd will be relieved. Time to move on.

how does that work though? you have a head coach that's been fired and a staff that has no idea where there next pay check is coming from. Even if they let Dooley stay to finish the season, how hard does everyone work at recruiting and staying in touch with our commitments as the vultures swoop in to pull them away from us? At this point, with it being publicly discussed as much as it is now, i dont guess it makes a difference if you formally announce the firing now or wait til the end of the season. Everyone knows it's a done deal and we just live with the fall out. Now, really, the only question is how quick do we name a replacement and how much damage will be done to our recruiting before that happens.

  • Iam disappointed and sick of losing. Game management isnt the problem. 3rd and automatic is the problem. They, Dooley and company, got us scoring 36 points avg a game. A running game that hasnt carried us. Dooleys game management gave us 2 shots at winning at Georgia and 3 in 2 minutes at either SC or MS not sure which one, its all a blur. He can manage the game. The defense is the problem and it has killed us this year. Our offense hasnt been that great in years. I am a Dooley fan, because he is a class act and we havent had any embarrassing problems except getting beat. If they are going to let him go wait til the end of the year or give him one last year with these recruits. I guess everybody thought we would win the east with a bunch of 2 and three star recruits.

Well said. The man took the job when Kiffin left us high and dry and not many others wanted it. I really wished we would've come out gangbusters in league play this year, but it didn't happen. Really disappointing.

Umm...I respect your opinion but game management isn't a problem? Are we watching the same UT team play? Defense is a problem but as head coach, that's on Dooley as well. It's like a business. A CEO (Dooley), if you're not doing your job and leading the corporation (UT) in the right direction, it's time for a change before things get worse. I wish Dooley the best...just somewhere other than at UT.
